I took my CRD in for a CEL and they say the Air Mass Sensor is bad. I had the car go into the crip home mode, I pulled over and turned off the car and re-started and everything was OK.

What does the Air Mass Sensor or Mass Air Sensor do? I on my first EGR replacement that is maybe 10000 miles old.

Thanks,

Tom[/i]

You will find the mass airflow sensor in the lid of the air filter. Functions exactly as the name implies, senses the amount of air entering the engine (turbo in this case). They usually fail after they get wet or oily from running an oiled-style air filter. Any idea what caused the failure? Were you driving in the rain when it failed?

Also, if you change your air filter (or fiddle with the airbox), it might throw a CEL but shouldn't put the car into limpmode.

CEL popped on with no rain, or river foarding :P

The replacement mass airflow sensor is due in the Monday, and from the sound of it the fix is simple.

Thanks guys!

Tom

To update everyone on the Mass Air Flow CEL. The sensor was replaced and the CEL was back on w/i 50 miles.

I brought it back in and they call saying that the air filter was oily & dirty. My question was the tech really was looking for the obvious and I am guilty of not checking the filter.

The filter was replaced and the tech said the car barely runs. Well get a update tomorrow.

Thanks,

Tom

The next thing that will pop is the EGR. The stealer may or may not replace it because the really problem is the "Air Flow Control Valve". When this valve goes bad it throws the CEL that you have and the first thing the dealer checks/blames is a dirty air filter. The Air Flow Control Valve controls the air the EGR.

They were in the airbox previously to replace the sensor and didn't bother to look at the air filter? Could be time to start complaining.
