Marty and Ted,

Looked into doing two routes of paining the rear bumper.

1. Powdercoat black or matching KJ's color
2. Having it "just" painted to color match.

Costs:

Powdercoat black - ~$125-185
Powdercoat matching color - ~$400
Color match paint - ~$365 through Jeep Dealers Body and Paint

As I look at the KJ with matching flares, I don't think black will look good on the bumper. So......matching paint......powdercoat is only a tiny amount more.

Doing it myself in garage with cold temperatures is not much of an option.

Personally, I would have it sandblasted, then painted. When I lived in Wichita, all my products were powdercoated by Coleman Outdoor Products since they had a huge facility there. Even their powdercoating didn't last very long and would chip and flake off, and moisture would get under the coating and get that bubbling cancerous rust. The sandblasting will make a big difference in whatever coating you use being able to adhere to the surface much better, but I honesly don't think a matching powder coat is going to match as well as a paint job from the dealership, and you can have them get you a little thing of touch up paint at anytime. Big key though, is sandblasting.

I have also seen powder coat fade and lose its shine quick too. I would go with body shop paint and touch up paint.

To be honest I think once I get one of Martins bumpers I will probably de-oil the metal with break cleaner/gun degreaser, give it a light sanding and just put a few coats of black/charcoal Rustoleum on it to match my stock fender skirts/molding. Pretty sure based the experiences I have had already with my current stock bumpers that I will be painting it to some extent after any difficult run we do anyway. ;)

Not yet. Found a top place that will do a black Powdercoating for ~$100 since they do large volume and can give lower prices. Also a member of the national Powdercoating association that holds specific standards.

I don't think I can afford the $400-$450 cost of color matching (don't forget that I would also have to do it to the front bumper). After giving you $XXX, buying a PS2, a new 50" HDTV, paying for a plumber to fix my water heater ($101 for 30 minutes!!! I am in the wrong business - plus I can have a plumbers crack), and heading back to Ohio for a couple weeks soon, the money is getting drained fast.

I hurt my back last week trying to get that thing out of the KJ and then back in the next day, by myself.

It is a beast! I think the weight of it in the KJ helped my driving along the icy roads tonight.

Well, I am in Ohio and the bumper is in Colorado. No painting for awhile.
