Probably be less expensive in parts, if just a high pinion dana 30 was used and the stock rear axle w/ about 4-5" of lift. That way you can run 33s and have a good cross between a trail vehicle and something you can drive everyday.

I would be very interested in something like that too Eddo. Untill then, I'll have to start pinching pennies to save up !!! Of course, lockers and new tires/wheels are going to bite into the savings....

I have considered makign the parts, just haven't gotten energized enought to do it.

Anyway, I still have the write up posted on my Comcast homepage if you are interested. http://home.comcast.net/~jedijawa

Mate, that's an awesome write-up and an even more awesome Jeep!

I've got about a million questions, but I'll restrict myself to just one; do you think it would be possible to do a similar conversion using just Jeep parts? I'm thinking; get an XJ from the wreckers, maybe plus something like Rock Krawler's Super 8 Long Arm (with rear coil conversion) kit.

Now, how do you think I'd go about convincing my wife that we should sell her car to pay for the conversion?

Adam, I just read your write-up on your SFA conversion. Excellent!
Awesome engineering job on that suspension. Lookin' at your wheelin' pics makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside, 'cuz all my prev Jeeps were SFA's. Your SFA puts the RK7 to shame. Did y'all see those RK7 poser shots in 4wheeler mag? Oh sure, the rear axle articulates like crazy, but that's it. Very little articulation in that front IFS - only ground clearance. Enjoy your mini-monster man! Did I hear someone say, "...enter 4wheeler mag's TTC '06". 8)

jeepnjer Noticed in one of your pics you had three different tires on the thing. Were you testing tires or just used what you had laying around? If you were testing which worked the best?

Jedi-
I've got a little sibling argument going on with my little bro. He says there is no way that the 3.7L could power your beast, especially not as a semi-daily driver. How driveable is it really? Highway speeds attainable?

What about the drivetrain? Are you expecting the trans to tank any time soon? How is your engine holding up?

Questions:

Tires, they were just what I had available when I first put it together. In the shots that Troysterr took in AF canyon you can see the full set of Maxxis Kreepy Krawlers that the Libby now sports. Oh, and BTW, those freakin tires rock!

Power from the 3.7, Sorry Calvin, but your bro is dead wrong. The 3.7 does fine, the proper gearing is the key (as it is with all engines). I can not say enough about the 3.7's performance. Plus, you guys all know that when the T-case is in low range, the KJ's ECM changes the fuel mixture, spark timing and a couple other things to get more torque. It really is a well engineered and potent power plant. The ONLY thing I have done performance wise to te engine is to install a Flowmaster muffler... which really can't be considered a performance mod in my opinion.

I am curious how Firebland's project is coming... since this thread was his first and has been hi-jacked by, well, me I guess... lets turn it back to Firebland... what say you oh one who will next feel the pain of a SFA conversion? LOL

After much calculations and thinking on this topic, I have decided to go with a solid front axle like Fireblad and JediJeeper.

I wanted to get the RK lift but after reading (and seeing) about all the pain it has cost Fireblad, I am not willing to try my luck with one. Plus in the long run I think it will be cheaper to just "rip it all out," so to speak, instead of waiting around for a solid axle conversion or going with the overly expensive RK kit. Stay tuned...it will be within a year, just getting started on the basics now...

See Allyrand's post on the topic somewhere else on this board. Very good approoach for those willing to wait for the bugs to get ironed out.

I've heard that too. So I had what I though was a brilliant idea. Just find a way to trick the computer into thinking it is in 4-low to take advantage of that. Actually, it is quite easy. Just need to hook up a 60 ohm resistor to plug for the transfer case position sensor. I was going to wire in a switch if it did anything.

So I hookup a the 60 ohm resistor and sure enough. The little 4-low light came on and the RPMs where about 100rpm higher at idle. However, other than that I could really not tell a difference in the way the engine felt or the transmission shifted. I though it would hold the gears longer and shift firmer. But really felt no difference.

Oh well only cost me a 2 dollars for the resistors at radio shack and was fun to do.

Going off what preformance/emission standards the manufacturer has to abide by (even in four low), I would not suspect that you would notice a huge difference driving in high range. From the reading I originally did on this when I was buying my lib, it really all amounted to moving the power curve down about 500-700 rpm, effectively putting the best available torque down closer to 4low rpm ranges.

I will have to dig up the rest of the information and post it for you all.

JediJeeper, what would you say the total lift height was after your project ? Saw your write up which is the homegrown version of what the SnN fab did here somewhere on a thread. Yours being the original version. Nice, very nice...

JediJeeper, I was wondering if you could post a picture of how you connected your steering assembly together. Im not speaking of the Tie Rod and seering knuckles, but of the steering pump and how the steering is connected to the steering wheel. Thanks!
