Was going to Dayton, OH last friday (Nov 24) on Interstate 70, about 15 miles from Zanesville. Had the CRD in cruise at about 68 mph. Engine started to miss like it was running out of fuel. Pulled over to side of road and it died. No CEL or warning lights. Restared up fine. Pulled out onto highway, but it took at least 30 seconds to get up to 60 mph, it just had NO power. Engine would reve to 3500 rpm's then slam into overdrive. Did that a few times. Pulled into a Love's truck stop a few miles down the road, and filled the tank up thinking I may have had some condensation in the fuel system. Needed 16 gallons to fill-up. It has ran fine since then. This is the first time I have had any problem with the vehicle. Had about 16,250 miles on it when this happened. So, more problems down the road? All the fuilds (trans, engine oil) were/are all at proper levels. Am I screwed down the road? Thanks for any input.

Sounds more like you were staring to suck air from the tank. It only takes one good slosh from an abrupt lane change or braking, or change in grade to suck in an air pocket and loose prime on this type of system. I still wonder where the pick-up tube is located in this tank (middle, front, rear, side???). This could be critical if you are driving in hilly areas (ie.... I-70 in eastern Ohio). Take it from experience, it doesn't get much worse than trying to prime a suction type system on an uphill exit ramp. As a general rule of thumb, I won't run a diesel very far under a 1/4 tank.

Well when I park in front of my house it is on a pretty steep hill. My fuel guage reads low in the morning until I level out so I assume the fuel guage pickup point is near the front of the tank...not sure which side tho.

The tank module is front middle, if that helps.

I've driven up I-470 from Rt 7 in eastern OH (at other times) and filled up at the Ohio Valley Mall and it took 18 1/2 gals. I-470 is a very steep grade. Could I have developed a crack or something in the pick-up tube. Hopefully this is an isolated incident. I think I will try to let the tank go down and drive up a steep grade somewhere safe.

That is a possibility, have seen this scenerio on other vehicles. Like getting a crack in a soda straw, will work fine until the fluid level is below the crack. Will even work below the crack line but some air will get into the system. The most likely place is the connectors outside the tank. Some others have reported them as already failing.

Also check the hose clamp connections under the hood, including the one at the pump. Air could be getting into the system from anywhere and aerating your fuel in the tank through the return line. A lower fuel level in the tank will tend to foam more, causing more problems than if this happened on a full tank.
