Component Speakers and Crossovers

I'll be installing Polk Component speakers in the front doors and dash soon, so I thought I'd ask where everyone is putting their x-overs... I don't see a need to reinvent the wheel here...

Also, are people using the factory wiring with the x-over in the middle, or running entirely new speaker wire? (as the to the tweeters, it would appear that running new speaker wire could be easy, but the doors might be slightly difficult..

Depending how much time you've got and how crazy you want to go you do have a few options.

I'd take the time to run new wiring, factory wiring is fairly brittle and just overall not good wire, in my opinion.

As for the crossovers, you could mount them in the door themselves, or just under the kick panels in there respective sides footwell.

For my crossovers i was able to put them in my center console under the plastic bin that is there. They are easily accessable and its alot easier to move if somethings gone wrong then taking the entire door panel off.

Running wires isnt too bad (a LONG THICK zip tie is your friend)

Originally i had my crossovers in the doors. Found rust on them swapping out the speakers a few months later. I now have mine mounted behind the glove box, plenty of empty space back there.

New wire for sure and I have the cross overs in the back because they are huge. If they are small behind the glove box works, but I don't think there is any room behind the kicks.

I put mine in the dash. One on each side of the Radio. There are cavities in there large enough to put a very big crossover. I velcro'd them in place to keep them from vibrating. On is attached the the cluster pod. The other is mounted to the Airbag box. (No it will not be a projectile if the airbag goes off. It's on the side and mounted to hard plastic framing.) This also helped with my wiring. I ran two speaker wires from the amp to the dash and then used the factory wiring to hit the door woofers/mids. Then I ran two wires to the tweeters in the dash and I was done. Took no time.

I put mine behind the kick panels on either side. They fit perfect. Of course you have to run all new speaker wire!!! The old stuff sucks. And since you are putting some nice components in like the polks you are ampin them right????

I actually mounted mine right to the Kick panels, so you can see them if you know where to look, but they're plenty out of harm's way. I have the same speakers you do, the Polk DB6500's i'm assuming. I amped them using an Infinity Basslink II with the optional amp expansion. I ran all new speaker wire (12ga. double shielded). The power cable is 0ga. and so is the ground. The signal cable isn't bad either, triple shielded and directionally wound. Pretty nice setup, and not that expensive considering how great it sounds. Now i just need to get a better battery and figure out why my front left tweeter buzzes (always has after i replaced the HU, even when i had the old Sony in there, now it's an Alpine)

Yes, I'll be amping them.. DB6500 Components up front, D8 coaxils in the rear..

I have some old-school Rockford Fosgate Amps, and I'm going to see how they sound...

Punch 240x4 and Punch 200x2, with one of those punch links which makes the amp look like one huge amp.. if I can find Pics, I'll post...

if they don't sound as well as I want, I'll upgrade, but I have them sitting in the garage, taken out of my old car.. so I'll try them first. If anything, I have to run all new wire and cables for amps anyway...

for you guys that ran new wire thru the doors, how did you do it and how difficult was it? I was pressed for time when I installed my Type - R Alpine components and didn't really take a good look, plus I didn't want to mess with the plasic vapor barrer at the time. My crossovers are mounted to the back side of the knee stop panel below the steering wheel. There are 2 clips at the top and it is hinged on the bottom like the glove box....it makes for easy access.

I ran the new wire through the boot and managed to get it by the plug. it was a tight fit though. sorry these pics are not better.

Here is the amp I'm going to be using...... "Old School" Rockford Fosgate! I like the rugged look, and think it will go well with the KJ

Hopefully they pound it out as well as they once did, if they don't then it's no big deal... b/c like I said, I have to run wires anyway.....

How do you all get those little boots to snap back in the door? My drivers side is popped out for some reason and It doesnt matter how hard I push on it, its not going to pop back in.
