So I just picked up a whole set of nearly-new MT/Rs for a great deal. Now I just need to mount them.

I called Pep Boys, who said they would mount+balance for $10.99 per tire. When I showed up with tires, they said "oh, we only do the ones we sell" (but they didn't think to tell me that on the phone, of course, noooo).

VIP Auto does them for $20/tire

Sears says it'll be $10/tire for mounting, $12/tire for balancing. This time I specifically asked if they would do tires that I bring in.

I'm thinking I will go with Sears since they have walk-ins, are open till 8pm and are right near where I work. Anybody have any other suggestions on places to try?

Try wal-mart. You might have to lie about what vehicle they are for if they are "oversized" for the KJ. But they might not even ask.

I don't have any spare wheels, so they will have to actually take them off my jeep and mount them right then, so they will probably figure it out.

One person, (dont remember who) actually took their wheels off in the parking lot and brought them in one by one. The people at wal-mart probably wouldnt care what you were doing anyhow.

haha!

at that point I'd rather just pay the extra and not have to deal with it. I guess if they flat-out refused to put them on the vehicle I'd do it myself, but that is pretty ridiculous.

Any idea about how long it takes for them to do it?

figure on an hour, and wal-mart wont touch them if they aren't in their computer as stock for your vehicle. i'd go with sears or goodyear (or any other local garage).

I would get them mounted in any tire kingdom store, or discount tire. Then they give you lifetime rotate and balance.

I know for sure that discount tire will do it if you dont buy from them. Once I brought in my new car there, they rotated, balanced, and took out a nail for free. They say its free on one of the posters they have in the store. And the NTB I went to get my warrenty alighnments done for the Jeep, the sales guy said if we mount them they will give you free rotate, balanced, and repair. Not sure if its true or not. But discount will do it.

I may be a little late but I would go out and find the local 4X4 shop ,if you have one, talk to them
The local guy here is only 5 blocks fom my house and will dismount and M&B for $15 a wheel if he has to take them off its $20 a wheel
keep in mind this is the "regular customer price" wich I am but to save me the $5 per wheel he lets me use the jack and the impact to take them off my self
and if I move them it's only $10 per wheel + a 24oz beer
If you dont have a local 4X4 shop go to a local mech. not a chain and talk to them you may get a beter deal and they would probably help you out should you get in a bind

Definitely a good idea, but there aren't any local 4x4 shops anywhere near boston. The local garages are probably going to want $20/tire or more from me, I imagine, and I can't imagine they can just fit me in when I show up like sears said. I think I will give Discount Tire a call and see what they charge. Thanks!
