What are the best intervals to change the fron and rear diff fluids? Prefered fluids? (I have an 05 Renny with 5sp automatic, 4H, and 4L if that helps).

http://www.hotrodoil.com, make sure to get 2 qts. for the front and 3 for the rear (and an oil pump). DCX says 15K.

If you get the AMSOIL your intervals will increase alot from 15K. JJ will know exactly how much that will be.

2 quarts for the front and 3 for the rear. JJ says 2 for the rear, but it takes 3 bottles. Me and moose just changed his and it need just a shade over 2, same with mine. Also, the amount needed should be in your owners manual.

I ordered from JJ a little while back. I have an '05 with the LSD rear. A total of 4 bottles of Amsoil 75w-140 and 1 bottle of additive (for the rear), was enough for the job. I did it at 12+K because I was switching my oil over to Amsoil as well, and figured I order it all and change the fluids at the same time. Here's his site AMSOIL.

Good point actually. The limited slip rear end takes just a tad bit short of 2 quarts. The open rear end takes just a little more than 2 quarts. I guess the clutch packs and other hardware take up the extra volume in the rear.

My guide shows 4.2 pints which = about 2.1 Qts. I have been able to get to the fill plug with 2 Qts but that was also with adding the bottle of posi additive. Figures huh, you gotta buy 3 to fill it up all the way. I should sell smaller bottles to go w/ the 2 Qts.

BTW, anyone with the new Rock Lizard cover notice how much lube it is taking? Curious if it has any extra capacity?

Oh and w/ the Amsoil Severe Gear you will be fine out to 50,000 miles under the severe service interval. However, If you do a lot of water crossings Please keep an eye on your diff oil to see if it is contaminated. If when checking the level you see any milky looking stuff in there or the level is overfull when pulling the fill plug, it is probably a good idea to change it. That also goes for Any gear oil.

Thanks for the plugs and kind words my loyal customers! 8)

I just wish my words were as kind as I started putting 75w-90 in the rear with the 75w-140 to make it hit the top  I guess that gives me 75w-138 or so... :)

Hey JJ, I've done three diffs on three different KJ and they all needed more than two. I think the reason is you can never get all the fluid out of the bottle and into the diff. Especially the thick stuff when you are using a gear oil pump. There is always about an ounce or so left in the bottle and some that remains in the pump. Therefore you really need the 3rd bottle to bring it up the fill plug. A smaller pint size bottle would be great. I believe the limited slip rear end takes something like 1.9 quarts so you would probably be okay with getting just 2 quarts and a tube of limited slip additive.

The Trac-Loc rear takes 5 0unces of Additive which can be purchased at Advance Auto Parts. It's needed to make it work, why don't know? Joe

The limited slip device is to enhance traction, it uses clutches, so a friction modifier (limited slip additive for the gear oil) is required. And you have a NP231, command-trac part time four wheel drive transfer case.

Yes. You MUST used the additive in the rear diff but not in the front. I just buy mine from Jeep a couple of bottles at a time. They are pretty cheap.

I have done it three times and never have used a full 4 quarts total. You also don't have a gasket on your rear diff. Just use red silicone. The best tool you can have if you don't have an oil pump is to get a squeze bottle so that you can simply use it to sqirt the grease into the filler hole until it starts to run out. In a pinch, I acutally used the little additive bottle once and it worked but was time consuming.

The front diff is child's play...drain then fill. I can't understand why Jeep will charge you $180 for diff fluid change, lol

mobil 1 75/90 in the front and 75/140 rear, with pint of lucas oil synthetic oil stabilizer in both. the rear limited slip has never worked as smooth and as effective as now.
