I was driving my cousin to the airport today and my jeep suddenly died 1 mile from my house. The oil light came on and that was it, no ignition what so ever. I checked the oil and it was black and it looked like their were metal shavings on the end of the dip stick. My jeep has 4350 miles and I bought it with 330, should'nt a certified vehicle get some fesh oil which should last around 6000miles? So I'm sending it to a dealership for warranty work.

Has anyone had a similar issue or does anyone know what might have caused my engine to crap out

Uhhh, to many CRD burnouts? J/K

First of all, black oil is normal, just takes some getting used to I suppose, if you arent used to diesels. You arent officially due for an oil change until 6250 miles so that is okay. METAL SHAVINGS?! Bad, very bad. The oil light would come on if the engine died no matter what the reason. The only catastrophic failure I have heard of was actually the founder of lost who had a valve keeper come loose and destroy the engine. Let us know what it turns out to be.

And dont forget to take that chip off before you let them have it.

So are you saying it wont turn over at all? Or just wont start?

Same thing happened to me one day when I tested my SP module on HO and kept increasing the pressure. After a couple seconds it turned off and the oil light came on. I pulled over, let it sit for a little and turned it back on. No metal shavings though :-)

These metal shavings were adhering to your dipstick? Normally they collect at the bottom of the oil pan and in the oil filter.

The jeep is on its way to the dealership. The end of the dip-stick looked like it was holding magnetized metal shavings! It wont start, turn over, fire, rumble or make a sound like it wants to start, just starter turning.

There is a very remote chance that I ran out of gas because my fuel gauge was reading just over 1/4 tank short. The reason I say remote chance is because there are only 320 miles on this full tank. I think there should be atleast 4-5 gallons left and therefor my engine probably suffered some serious problem...

One other possibility if it was only about a mile from your house, battery could have perished due to some problems with the Optimas and BCM issues. When mine went it almost cranked over than shut down, battery was down several cells.

Ouch! Hopefully it isn't the engine. This is why I am hesitant to put a performance module on my CRD without guages to measure boost, EGT, and trans temp.

CRD, where are you located? If stealership can't figure it out and you're nearby where I am, I'd be happy to look at it. Or, if you're up near Detroit, tell the dealership to talk to STAR and have it sent over to VM Motori's shop for a look over. Let me know if it's something major or what happens, I can get parts from VM, have the tools to disassemble engine etc, and actually just got done going through 2 engines myself.

Have you been checking your oil level? These engines do use some oil between changes especially when new, if you ran short of oil you could have trouble and a voided warranty. I check mine everytime I get fuel.

Very few people know that is the proper time to check oil. Always a good idea to check it when you are fueling up.

Even if he ran low on oil, he would have to have lost a large amount to cook the engine (if that is the case). I changed my oil the first time at 600 miles and the oil was like sludge....glad I decided to change it.

he had less miles than the recommended oil change interval, I can't see how his warranty could be voided.

Doesn't sound like an oil problm anyhow, sounds like something just broke in there...

They're not technically mine per se, I'm just in charge of everything that relates to them. The university I'm at (Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology) has a research partnership with VM to use the 2.5L engines for the ChallengeX hybrid vehicle competition that we are a part of (ChallengeX). When they break I fix them, I do all the dyno calibration work, and once they're integrated into the Equinox we're building I'll be overseeing the emissions calibration. Additionally, I work during the summers with the company that's contracted to DCX and VM Motori for the calibration of all the new DCX applications that use the next-generation 2.8L Panther engine (KA,JK,KK,RT) so I get lots of in-depth time working with both DCX and VM on the nitty-gritty technical level about the engines, and also some with KJ since it is in its last year of production and there is still a limited durability fleet that needs tending to periodically.

I have a slew of pictures from when I had our two engines apart to get freshened after some failures so I'll put together a post showing how these things look inside (if you haven't seen them). [/url]
