Hi everyone,

I'd be up for leading a run out at the Rolls next Saturday or Sunday. This area is northeast of Phoenix, just north of Saguaro Lake. I figure a noon start time at the 'Butcher Jones' recreation area parking lot. There are tons of trails, hills and washes to play on. We'll even take a break at the lake itself. We'll probably be done and back on the road by 4pm or so.

Stock rigs can make it nearly everywhere, lifts are needed only for some of the technical hills. Free desert pinstriping will be available!

Butcher Jones is off of the Bush Highway. The Bush Highway can be reached by keeping on Power Rd. (if you are heading north from east Mesa), or by taking State Highway 87 (heading north towards Payson - look for the Saguaro Lake turn-off). The parking lot is the first one on the right before the pay station.

A fee is not required unless you park in the lots in this area.

Please let me know if you want to go!

Todd

Mine may be cancelled in lieu Roachman's run near Florence. I'll re-post when the weekend gets closer...

Todd, if you do decide to go let me know. I'd like to do the Coke ovens and stuff but may not be able to get a State Land Trust permit in time, plus I've been interested in what is out that side of Saguaro lake for a while.

Due to Roachman's conflicts, he had to cancel the Box Canyon run.

I spoke with Dave (AZSCOUT) and we are now going to the Rolls tomorrow as mentioned above.

Start time is 9am however, at the same parking lot. This'll be a half day run.

Man, what a GREAT morning out at The Rolls. Todd (phxtoad), Dave (AZScout) and myself (Corwyyn) had some fun rolling up and down the washes and rises out north of Phoenix. Here is a photo replay of the day.

We started out at the Butcher Jones rec site parking lot, then went out onto the Great Western Trail. After riding around for a bit we wound up at a nice little cove on the north shore of Saguaro Lake:

Then we went back out to try to get out onto the penninsula that you can see across the water behind the jeeps. While we were going along Todd found a little climb to try. I have to admit, being mostly stock I was hesitant to try some of these obstacles, but with a bit of encouragement and some great spotting I was able to grab some air:

Gettin' some air

Then across the way it was back up to the top. A bit of speed and some smokin' tires and I was up and over, then it was time for Dave to come up:

After getting out to the end of the penninsula we headed back to the parking area:

Here is an image of the track my GPS unit recorded:

Heres a panorama out on the trail:

I have to give a big thanks to both Todd and Dave. With their help I was able to do things today that I probably never would have tried on my own. Thanks guys 8)

Considering how close this is to Phoenix I'd definitely be up for going out again (and again and again and again). Plus there are some geocaches scattered here and there that I'd like to try for.

Hey what a beautiful day to wheel! Thanks Kevin and Dave for coming out.

Frankly I'm still amazed at the hills Kevin's stock KJ (with nearly bald SRA's no less) clambered up. Way to go! His engine skid got a good workout for sure.

Dave finally got the chance to get the butterflies out of his stomach after his 'excitement' at Moab and the subsequent reconstruction. Nothing like a rutted off-camber hill or two to get you re-energized! Nice job!

I conveniently took a bunch of wrong turns as you can see on the geo-track - but that's half the fun. As you can see in some of the shots, this area is ridiculously scenic, and is only 45 minutes from central Phoenix. It is nearly unlimited in its size, too.

Hopefully we can get out again really soon!

Yeah, my engine skid definitely paid for itself :) As for the tires, I am going to do some shopping around today to see if I can come up with something better. 35k on the stock ones is probably about enough... So Todd, where are the pics? I know you had a shot of me going down the one slope from the front, give it up 8)
