My driving needs are about the same as yours and I am stock, I went with the Cooper ATR's and I like them a lot (had them for over a year already). I had the same problem, there isnt a whole lot of info out there for them (good or bad) but I asked around at various tire shops and everyone seemed to like them. Destination AT's got good feedback too and I think these replaced those.

Anyway, it came down to those and the Firestones for me as well and I went with Cooper based on price alone ($420 out the door for 4). I think I made the right choice, havent had any problems, great in the snow, rain, light off road and arent loud or anything.

I did hear that they wear rather quick and they should be rotated often but I havent seen that yet. I rotate every other oil change and a while ago I switched to every three oil changed because I have seen no wear or cupping so I dont know if it is true or not.

Hope this helps, good luck!

From all I've read running a directional tire backwards isn't a huge deal. Sure, you want to have them roll in the intended direction - limiting rotation to front-to-back not front-to-opposite-back - but it won't ruin them.

Quote:
Mounting a directional tire in the wrong direction is not an inherently unsafe condition. Although the tire will not perform as well as if mounted in the correct direction, its safety performance levels continue to assure adequate control of the vehicle.

As far as the spare is concerned, I don't think it's a huge issue unless you plan on running for extended periods. The spare on most sedans is about 1/3 as wide and an inch or two shorter, yet they can still limp home and limp around town as you get the regular tire replaced. Those "donut" spares handle like an old grocery store cart, but it'll get you places...been there, done that. I'd much rather be running a full size directional spare the wrong way than deal with that.

ETRTO Study
Car Talk article

I've read and heard great things about the "TripleTred" tires and want to try them out next on my car or the Jeep.

Joe,

I have found that the Firestones are actually a little cheap around here. Not really enough to make a difference. It's amazing how much prices have risen in the year of high gas prices. I'm looking at $525+ for a set of 4 out the door. Prices in this area tend to be a little more affordable...for the most part.

I will probably make the final decision when I go to get them installed. I saw my first set of Coopers on a pickup where I work. They look like they'd be pretty sticky for an AT tread. I'll keep this thread posted after I have the new rubber mounted.

Wow that is good for the Firestones, I got a quote of $600+ (cant remember the exact amount) without tax and all that.

I found a tire place that does nothing but tires, no alignments or anything. Just mount, balance, rotate and away you go. Has a small office and a two bay garage that's it. Three guys work on your car at once, it's the fastest place I have ever seen. Same warranties, free rotation and they do repairs and their prices are significantly lower than MOST places that I have seen around here. At that point I already decided on the ATR's, so I went with them.

I really like the way they look too, I think you will be surprised when you actually see them in person and again on the KJ. Good luck with whatever you decide and keep us posted.

I got 2 sets of these and l love em but 03kjltd is right as our fleet dept don't like em because of the directional issue and the spare... I just keep a regular spare as the OAD is close enough to get me to a tire shop.

I would highly recommend the Firestone Destination AT 245/65R17. If your Libby is as high as my prelowered that is over 5 years old, they will fit with no problems. If you're a little lower, you could put a Rusty's 1/2" spacer up front and an extra spring isolator in the rear.

The quote I got was @ $600 for 225/75/16 Destination LE's. They wouldn't even discuss replacing with 245/70/16 in either LE's or AT's. I left and figured I would check another local dealer or just buy them on-line. Still have plenty of life left in the factory Goodyears so not too motivated to buy (until I spin it around again!).

Ok, so I have to seriously consider tires within the next month as no one, not my bf or my family wants me using the tires I have in the snow...

So these are 2 tires that I have found that come in my size. I was wondering what sort of feedback you all could give me!

Toyo Open Country AT (Not as agressive as I would like....but come in my size) ($135...but can prolly get a better price)

Mastercraft Courser AT (fairly agressive...decent price, come in my size)($119)

Also found Geolander AT/S come in 235/65/17 (in fall 06)...those look awesome!

good luck.

I have had them for a while now, i need to take some better pics, but i haven't had them rub yet, so far i like them. Lots of Grip, only complaint is my Liberty sat for about a week and i think the tires were flat spotted for a few miles, but the vib went away, it might just be a cold weather thing too.

It's looking great, now the HP in the spare rack is lonely :(

Looks like they did a number on the rims when they were mounting them? or were they there before.

no they didn't mess up the rims, they got lots of soapy lube crap all over them, and one does have a yellow curb shot mark (courtesy of the previous owner) one rim is brand new, and then of course there is the given corroded spot from the old wheel weight

They look OEM, and accents your bumpers, looking great. Did you try full turn to left and right and stopped to check the inner wall against upper arms?
Also flat spot issue was a strange, I never had mine sitting for about 9 days before, didn't have that problem. I wonder if that was a new tire thing.
Enjoy your new wheels, and let us know if it ever snows, and how it handles.

Northbee ~ Now that you've had your Warngler Silent Armors on for a while, any update?

Have you noticed any decrease in MPG with them?

That seems to be common complaint and most blame the decreased MPG to the weight of the tire. Although, I wonder how many that complained of worse MPG had gone up drastically is size and neglected to mention it.

For a choice to fit my 17's and my needs, I keep coming back to the Silent Armor.

Sandracer - after 6,500 miles with the Wrangler Silent Armors I can say that these tires are worth the money!

Goodyear did a great job - after driving the original Wrangler HP for a while - with all the disadvantages - the company regained my confidence!

The tracktion is very good - no slipping on rainy roads and they did great on their first snow (1 inch on an interstate exit) ... I am looking forward to really deep snow.

And they look great on the car - for me the profile looks more like "off road" compared with other ATs ... on the other side they are more silent at highway speeds than my old Wrangler HP. Goodyear did a good job in adding kevlar and some rubber mixtures for noise reduction.

The tires came with 60,000 miles warranty - and I believe they would do this mileage easily cause they show no wearing after the first 6,500 miles.

My MPG did not decrease - I am still doing 16.3 mpg in average (between 22.38 and 14.45)

To get the exact results I am always multiplying my mileage with 1.017 (cause the tire has an 1.7% diameter difference to the 235ers).

Glad to hear it. Thanks.

I was really hoping to find a good 17 inch A/T and not have to switch to 16 inch wheels.

I was a bit surprized when I started comparing tire weights. While the Silent Armor was heavier than stock at 38 pounds, there are heavier.

I hade to go to a 245/70R16 to do the comparisons but both the BFG T/A KO and the General AT2 were heavier than the Goodyear.
