 Post subject: CRD oil filters? Is there a right and wrong purchase?

Ok i purchased mid level FRAM filter for my CRD i belive its the truck guard filter. Some have mentioned its cellulose filter media unlike cheaper orange paper fitler. Would Chrylser try and not honer warranty engine work with this installed? Someone said that Cummins wouldnt be covered with FRAM installed?

I would use the oem filter. I have no concrete evidence to prove it's better but I have a gut feeling on this one. This is the only vehicle I've ever bought an oem filter for. I also had a look at a new fram filter book and I'm pretty sure they now list a separate filter # for the crd engine. It is not the same as the 3.7 #. Make sure you have the right filter.

I actually just looked at fram's website and they list ph8316 for the crd and ph3600 for the gasser. I don't think they had two seperate filters for the liberty's before. Somone correct me if I'm wrong here.

Fram used to list the 3600 for both engines. Now, if only Wal-Mart stocked air filters for Libertys.

they have to by law, but if they won't for whatever reason or if you get out of warrenty, fram will. At my next oil change i'm going to cut open the OEM and fram toughguard 8316 and compare. the fram I think it a little shorter, but if it meets the specs, i'd be happy.

For the $5 or less saved I would stick with the OEM filter. The reason for aftermarket filters costing less is they are usually not built to quite the same spec's as the OEM filter, this even applies to air filters. Most will be close, but not as good as OEM, with a few exceptions such as when synthetic filer material is used. Some other things are, bursting pressure may be weeker, the anti flow back if required may not even be used in some, by-pass pressure could be slightly different. The OEM mfg (D/C) can legally refuse warranty when aftermarket filters are used, and frequently do.

I have had friends warranty refused when none OEM oilfilters were used, 2 were Toyota's, 1 Ford, and 1 VW TDI. Only one had a sucessful out come, and that was a Dr. friend that had the $$$ to hire a lawyer. Also had a local guy I know that used incorrect oil against dealer advice on a Dodge Magnum with Hemi V8 that has the MDS valve system, it required minum of 5w-30 and he used his old faithful 20w-50 and suffered an engine failure while in Mississippi. The dealership there saw the 20w-50 Castrol sticker and refused the warranty repair. The guy ended up paying for a rental and game back and took a truck down a brought the car back to his dealer, they had done the oil change at his request, who had logged it in the big computer. Well D/C bounced the warranty request and the guy ended up letting the dealership buy the car from him and took his beating and went to Ford dealer for replacement. I forgot to mention, he is a wealthy farmer & banker with deep pockets.

Wix-Napa Gold is what I just stocked up on when I was in the US. I bought everythig NAPA had in stock. 2 air and 6 oil and they were thee same price as a air filter at the local dealer.

When I bought the mobil 1 0W-40 they had Purolator reg filters for CRD or Premium/platinum? for a few bucks more. Not sure if any cheaper than OEM but bet it is as good if not better. $8+/-

The one time I've let the dealer do an oil change, while it was in for other work, they stuck an aftermarket from Carquest on it instead of the OEM. Wonder how that would have played out in a warranty claim.

This simply proves a point that even common sense can't be purchased with a fat bank account. The days of people still using 10W40 and 20W50 in modern-day vehicles amazes me.

I'm with OldNavy in regards to using the OEM oil filter. An aftermarket 3.7L filter may fit the 2.8L engine, but there is a difference (the dealership plainly shows different listings). I'll stick with the OEM filter from the dealer until the aftermarket has a proven, reliable filter specifically for the 2.8L CRD-----and that being said, it may not happen with as few units of the CRD here in the USA.

I'd never use one on any Dodge RAM with a Cummins Turbo Diesel....I've owned three since December of 1997 and always used OEM filters or Fleetguard Stratapores.

I once owned a 1987 Dodge Omni 4dr.....purchased it used in May of 1990 w/63k on it. I sold it in July 1999 with 347k on it......it only had 10W30 Castrol and FRAM filters every 4k miles or so.

Like my 80's BMW talk about nice filters mahle they where engineering marvels. I remmember back in high school automotive class teacher says filter is a filter dumb booty i also got Ds lol.

I would likely stick with Mopar due to the uniqueness of the CRD & filter but decided synthetic media makes too much sense and have gone with Amsoil Ea. There was only a single Fram for all Liberty's just a few months ago.

I say and can prove it STAY AWAY FROM FRAM OIL FILTERS!! The NAPA brand the gold one is a wix filter and a tad better than the OEM cut them open ,witch I have and you can see the difference...

Go with the OEM filters which are made in Italy, You can get a case of six of them from Hall Dodge/Jeep in Michigan. Total cost shipped is $49.90 for 6 OEM filters. The cost divided by six equates to $8.32 per filter. You can get them from Hall's eBay store:

I purchased this 6 filter case and it arrived promptly. The last oil change I used the WIX, but I want to go back to OEM and will do so on the next OC.
