I just had the water in fuel light come on at 16k kms, do I need to replace the filter (reccomended interval is 20k on severe driving schedule) or drain it? Is there a way to drain it without eating diesel and having it run down your arm? LOL Theres not much room there at all. How long can you drive like this before it has to be fixed? There is nothing in the owners manual about draining it either...how convinient is that.

I am not an expert, but there is a sensor (water detection) on the bottom of the filter, that could be taken off, and drained. You may have some water in the fuel, and if you change the filter it may come right back. Just a thought.

Yeah I figure I picked up a tank of fuel with more water then it should be. The light came on at the end of a road trip, so I waited as long as possible to burn most of that tank, then refilled and used a double dose of power service. Hopefully draining the water seperator will fix it until its replaced in 3.somethign k kms

They sure put it in one pickle of a spot LOL

If you can find PowerService Diesel 911 treatment, it is supposed to be able to get rid of the water in fuel. Might be worth a try.

If you got enough water to trip a WIF light, you can drain it from the bottom to get you going but you should also replace the filter asap to avoid problems.

There is the other option with the fuel water separator where I have gone through 2 complete fuel water separator units and 3 fuel filters just filters in the first 20K due to a short occuring in the electrical system that fools my indicator light to flash on and off intermittently when the weather is damp outside.

I have not been able to locate the source of the short, but have learned that if you truly have water in the fuel water separator the light on the dashboard will remain on until it has been reset. It will not flicker on and off intermittently as mine does when the weather is damp.

On the bottom of the fuel filter there is a petcock you can use to drain the water from your filter. Refer to the OM for full instructions.

How much money did the bean counters save by making this inconvenient?

Don't see the inconvenience, unscrew the sensor and drain the filter if needed. Most of the diesel filters I've seen over the years don't have any drains. Just keep in mind draining water from a low/fine micron diesel fuel filter is a temporary fix.

I don't think we can blame this on the bean counters! Look at a VW tdi filter assembly  It's very basic. We have a priming pump, fuel heater and water sensor and vw has none of these. VW's do have a plastic water drain where our water sensor is. Yes the engine compartment is crowded but show me a modern car that's not  Maybe if you take the two bolts off the bracket you can get it off easier

Must be you guys have a different fuel filter set up. Mine has a water drain on the bottom of the fuel filter, it is the water in fuel sensor that has a small plastic tube you can put a small hose on to drain the filter. Done it several times already, not because light came on, but just to be safe. OEM service manual says to open the water drain (water in fuel sensor) then open the bleeder valve on the side of fuel filter head to let the fuel/water drain out of the filter. Then just close everything up and re-prime the system with the hand bleeder pump. :)

I'll have to check mine, I thought I only had the water sensor screwed into the bottom of the filter. I'll look tonight.
