I picked up a pack of neodymium super-magnets for real cheap at a discount hardware store last year. I put one on the drain bolts of both of my bikes. There was a slight amount of blackish stain on the bolts that wiped off once the magnets were removed. The magnets did not budge, by the way. I imagine that they could be simply stuck onto the filter itself...

The filter will stop all metal that could or would be a problem is the only reason. Actually I really don't see the need for the magnets and only use a Fumoto. Only time I ever used a magnet was for something like a rear end that has no filter to clean the gear oil on any shavings.

I put one of those neodymium round super magnets on the drain plug of the CRD's transfer case after I changed the factory fluid. I wish I'd done it before the change, but I'm still interested to see what it catches at the next change.

That is the type of place I was talking about, chain and gears with fluid that has nothing to clean the fluid. That is a good place for one and a reason to have a regular service schedual the transfer case. I have a Fumoto oil drain on the transfer case and that makes it a snap to change if you have a skid plate as I do. Just attach a tube to the nipple and flip a valve, no mess and very little time required.

Old Navy: Which drain valve is for the transfer case?

Check with Greg at lubrication Specialest, but I believe it was for oil pan in the Cummins in the Dodge PU truck.

After comparing specs between Mobil 1 (5W-40) and Amsoil (HDD, DEO, & Euro), and after thoroughly interrogating Amsoil tech help on separate occasions, I decided to go with Amsoil HDD 5W-30. Amsoil tech insisted throughout my calls that HDD offers the best protection possible among their oils if I don't mind risking my engine's warranty, otherwise the Euro formula is their standard recomendation (they didn't mention HDD until I brought it up and then made the warranty risk clear). I am still a bit uncertain regarding the slightly lower High-Temp, High Shear viscosity rating in comparison with the other oils listed. Amsoil was never able to give satisfactory specifics on why their HDD is better despite the lower rating, but it is very feasible given the multi-dimensional nature of engine oil wear protection. I meant to post on bobistheoilguy.com for more info but had technical difficulties. I'll probably still do that; I'm sure some of the experts there could help clear things up. With the difference being so slight, Amsoil tech support's decent but limited explanations and seemingly unnecessary insistance won me over, along with the possibility of better mileage. I'll see about posting test results down the road.

Yep, the Series 3000 is a better oil in my experience. The 30W compared to 40W is the only reason they give a "possible" warranty problem warning.
