My wife loves her CRD, but both of us are frustrated as the CRD spends too much down time in the shop. The Liberty is perfect for our needs, but the CRD is not meeting our demands. So with this being said, I think we might be trading for a 3.7L Liberty. After driving my 2006 Dodge Cummins with now over 17,000 miles on it, I know what a good diesel design feels like with a solid automatic transmission. Maybe a few years from now a better diesel/tranny setup will find it’s way into the jeep market. I’m bummed as I had super high expectations for the CRD, but don’t know what else to do. I’m posting this to see how many of you have traded or are thinking about trading in your CRD for a gasser?

I'm looking but it won't be for another KJ or Jeep, or DCX product. Have other vehicles to use when it goes down and still have warranty left so I'm taking my time but know the CRD has to go. Just a matter of when, for what and how much to make a trade worth while.

I'm in the same boat. I bought a new vehicle so I wouldn't have to work about things breaking down and having down time in the shop. I've had this in the shop more than my old high miles toyota truck, and my old chevy pickup combined. I know for sure that this is the last new DC vehicle I ever buy.

The vehicle might be fine but there's better gassers out there. Id rather plop the money down on jk 4dr or toyota fj. Obviously the CRD is worth alot more than gas liberty i figure 4 to 5k more.

Unfortunately the secondary market isn't getting a warm & fuzzy feeling from this CRD. I would like to believe a CRD is worth more but currently lucky to recover a resale value on par with an identical gasser, which in itself is weak.

It is sad that so many people are having problems, I would have to think that there are more without major problems than those with them. For the most part I am happy, I think some people overreact when something simple needs to be done to their rig. Mine had a bucking problem but it went away after ULSD came in (I have not had any flashes or other TSB's yet), I wonder how many problems are being CAUSED by the lame TSB's and recalls? I swear mine needed some break in time to run right or something. I have 29,000 on it now and honestly runs better every day.[/b]

Well, not that any of you are overly interested………,but we traded our ‘05 CRD in for a ‘07 gasser 3.7L Liberty today. Most of you probably would not have made that move.. But my wife needed something that was reliable and not continually in the shop. We really like the Liberty concept and think the 3.7L with the current tranny is a pretty good setup. All you CRD owners have been a tremendous help and this forum far surpasses any other source of information and encouragement. I wont be going too far as I will be on the gasser part of this forum. But I can honestly tell you this much, it felt pretty good leaving the CRD in the lot while driving off in a new Liberty.

Don’t get me wrong, there was some serious money lost when making this trade in. The Dealer gave me the KBB trade in value + a little more, which isn‘t much on an 05 CRD with 20,000 miles. The good news is that we got the ‘07 3.7L Limited fully loaded with Leather/Sunroof/Heated Mirrors/4X4/Chrome Cast Aluminum/Wheels/Power everything/ for the base $23,000 price and then took another $3,000 rebate off for a total of $21,000. So that made us feel a little happier. Now instead of putting my time and money into the CRD to keep it running and up to par, I can now put my money into fun upgrades.

I am sure the mileage wont be as good but with gas prices it will probably be a wash, sometimes you have to make those kind of choices. I am truly curious to see how you guys like the 07, keep us posted.

Cheapest CRD I can find within 300 miles:

http://tinyurl.com/2zmfov

'05 Sport with 2.5k miles = $22.9k at dealer.

Similar 3.7 V6 Liberty, this one with 10k miles:

http://tinyurl.com/ywzgfu

This one goes for $16.9k. That looks like a $6k premium for the CRD option and 7.5k fewer miles. In the Pacific Northwest with its relatively high fuel prices & large population of diesel enthusiasts (read: TDI owners), CRD resale values are well above gas Liberty resale values -- contrary to some statements posted on this board.

Just wondering if you've switched to Kahlo from Champion yet...

I also traded my CRD, but for a Honda Ridgeline, after about 50,000 mile I just couldn't keep up with the repairs. It was something every week and DC wasn't much help. So far I like the Ridgeline, but I miss the CRD and will probably give Jeep another look if they can get thier act together.

Isn't the math off? Still, getting the '07 gas version for $21k makes me wonder about my quest for for a low mileage '06 CRD which will cost a couple thousand more, comparably equipped.

If you don't mind me asking, did you have an extended warranty? I'm curious what the cost of your repairs would have been after the 3/36 ended as well as the extent of repairs.

hmm..... I got my 06 Limited CRD new for 24,000 .. So if it just depreciates $1 for every 25K miles or so i'd say we're in good shape :)

I am having seconds thoughts with the methods of DC concerning the CRDs but I would not go back to a gas KJ. Been there...done that! With fuel costs over the long run continuing to rise...14-15 city and 18-19 hwy at best just doesn't cut it for me. I liked my Gas KJ enuff to jump into a CRD...I think that in the very near future we, L.O.S.T. Members, will figure out the tranny issue. With that taken care of, I think the CRD will be just fine. Even with some mods, InMotion Tuning, 3" Exhaust, Snorkel, Lift ect., the mileage should be just as good after the tranny fix. I am not going to let DC apply the F37 (UNLESS my tranny goes before we come up with a fix) because so far mine has been working fine. A real fix will make the CRD better than originally designed. Mileage, Towing, Performance should improve. I do understand the "frustration" some are having with DC's handling of the CRD. The Engine is not the problem but reverse engineering the tranny/engine/ECU and call it a fix is laughable.

Not yet, I have not had any issues to go complain about since my diesel tech left for Kahlo. The most difficult part will be leaving the luxury that Champion gives me to stand underneath the hoist and actually see what's going on when my CRD is serviced.

Sorry for the mathematical confusion  . Everything I wrote above was very misleading. I was thinking of the base model for the Sport 4x2. And to add to the confusion, we traded in the CRD and that’s how the figures really got twisted around. Basically the Limited 4x4 base price is $26,510. With all the additional upgrades on our model the total cost would have been $30,560. We paid $24,875 which is the base price for the Sport 4x4. I only got KBB value on the CRD which isn’t good for those of you who bought it new. Yes, many of you have reported the value of CRD’s as you see them for sale on Dealer Lots and through the Internet, but I can tell you, when it comes to trading that bad boy in, you WILL take a hit. The best thing from a financial end is to sell it right out to a private owner. I couldn’t get myself to do that because I feel like the CRD is a long term financial disaster and a high maintained machine with lots of down time. I wasn’t going to sell someone my problems and feel bad for doing so. We chose to take the hit and work from the dealer side. We miss the CRD  but do not miss the headaches. As for the 3.7L Liberty, we love it! :D And 15 years from now, the parts will be abundant, available, and affordable! There will also be lots of upgrades to choose from. I’d hate to see what the CRD will be like 15 years from now as parts might be harder to find :?:
