yesterday was my first oil change (that I had to pay for) and I was sort of dreading doing it, but it turned out to be not that bad.

Walmart sells 4 Qt jugs of shell synthetic CI+4 5-40 oil for $15 and fram tough guard filters for $5.

scored three jugs of oil and 2 filters for $45. I will need to buy two more quarts of oil since my engine takes 7 quarts, so that's $10 more, or $55 for two oil changes (~$28 each @ 6K miles).

I have a buddy who works at a oil filter testing lab and we will check out the old mopar filter next week and see how it stacks up against the TG8316 I replaced it with. the fram is a bit shorter so i will post what we find out.

Ripple!!! That reminds me of a nasty tasting cheap wine back in the 70', Boon's Farm was the nector of the God's back then for some of us. I will take that no further do to having daughters and grand kids.

Boon's farm is still on sale today, can't beat <$4/bottle fruity wine.

BTW, DON"T ever put 7 Qts of oil the CRD. when I changed the oil 7 qts put it right between full and fill, but once it warmed up it smoked real bad, i'll need to drain some out today, it was way past full on the dip stick.

what is the recomended oil fill anyone??

Yup the manual states 6.4 quarts and even that 0.4 quart will be sucked out real fast. I just do 6 qt change and have remarked the dipstick as other here have done.

6.4 qts. is the rated capacity. I don't believe 7 qts is the reason it was smoking. Probably has more to due with the cold weather and cold fuel. Extra 1/2 qt, wouldn't crawl under it in this weather to drain any out.

Mine smoked some last winter on very cold starts. As for last night, it was inside the garage and plugged in on a timer. I did notice the garage got cold last night, the 5 gal container of b100 has turned into butter.

break out the toast and hot chocolote RFCRD has plenty of butter.

The ULSD is about like #1 diesel because it has no or almost no periffin in the fuel so I guess with fact, and being 50 Cetane with plenty of PowerService along with being only 10*F out helped.

Just wait, DCX will eventually blame pump and EGR failure on using biodiesel made from transfats or partially hydrogenated oils.

I have several sources for diesel fuel close to home. Have a choice of ULSD from several stations or 2 small independent stations still selling winterized blended 500ppm LSD (don't know how they can still sell this stuff but they do). Can definately tell the difference as the USLD is much quieter in the cold.

RFCRD,
Using tansfats in a crd might be a double violation in NYC.
I just do 6 qt change and have remarked the dipstick as other here have done.
So where are you marking it, I guess on the low side?

Reason I ask is I did an oil change back in Oct. Measured 6.4 and it sat on the low side but it was above min so I left it.

Checked it about 4 weeks ago and it was a bit below min so I topped it up with probably about a quart.

Just checked again today and it is way above max, so what gives?

Not sure whether to suck some out now or just leave it be?

Just another little quirk for an engine. I had a 81 Nissan PU (gasser) and if you put the required 4 5/8's qts of oil in at oil change it would be gone in couple hundred miles, if you just did 4 qt oil change none would ever be needed between the 10k mile oil changes.
