Dill, if your expectaions are any thing near, or will compare it to a 100 hp TDI as a bench mark, DON'T BUY THIS! It's such a let down for performance and reliability.

My 2006 has been trouble free, I love it. I swear they get better with miles. I commute about 40 miles each way so that may be why I am not having problems but I think it is because I have an 06........Not sure...I have almost 30,000 miles and I have had it about 10 months. my mileage is around 23 MPG consistantly.(last tank was 23.5 on winter fuel though :?: )

I just had to go help out my buddy this past week. Took the CRD .. started it up easily ( was -12f) .. drove down the highway for 4-5 miles .. parke din front of his "TDI" ... he jumped in and sat on the heated seats for 5 minutes ... then got out .. put some diesel 911 in the TDI ... juumped back inthe CRD .... waited 10 more minutes ... then went back to the TDI .. started it up ... drove to the truck stop .. put some better fuel in to top off .. jumped in the CRD ... commented for the 10th time about how the TDI never warms up ... then bundled up for his trip back home in the TDI ....

left me with these parting words ... "I'm parking the Jetta and driving the Jeep ( he has a grand Cherokee as well) until it warms up !!!

and why would anyone compare an SUV to a econo car? they really are two different beasts ...

Hey the wife really likes the way the CRD heats up, unlike her '02 Jetta TDI. The only saving grace to the TDI was an excellent heated seat with 5 heat ranges. She was worried about not having heated seats in the CRD but she says they are a waste and not needed because the CRD has a real heater according to her. The CRD heats up faster and puts out heated air faster then my Dodge Magnum.

We have the heated seats in the TDI. They are a must in the northeast. That thing will take forever to get up to temp. Ours has 5 ranges and they are too hot after the first 2 for me. This was another question I had, glad to know they make heat faster.
I'm finding only sport models around here. I went on autotrader.com last night and did a nationwide search and found 175 crds with mileage between 500 and 30k, with the high being 50k.
The local choices are 13k miles for 20 with a sunroof, 27k miles, with sunroof for 19k, and 17k miles low options 17k.
I think I might do a test drive to see if I fit in one today. I wish more dealers did 24 hr test drives. The main reason I'm looking to get a crd, we are having a kid this summer, and there is no way we can all fit in the pickup, along with our 120lb Great Pyrenees.
VtDog, since you driving is probably close to what I do, 2 lane highways with little traffic, what are you get for mpg?

Have you ever wondered why it heats the way it does?

Made that way. Viscous heater plumbed in.

I didn't know that. VW's use glow plugs for the same purpose on manuals only. Does any one have an illustration on how it works and where it lives?

Dill, I live in southwest nh and have a crd with 37000 miles now. I've had in the shop once for seven days waiting for parts. I too drive a lot, my old car, a grand cherokee had 325,000 when I traded it for the crd. The crd was used and it had 27000 on it at the time. It is a limited with almost all options and I picked it up for $19500. I recently purchased an extended warranty, max. care 5 year 100000k $0 deductible for 2,375.00, I bought it through chryslerwarrantys.com. My hope is that all the major "bugs" will be out of it by the end of the warranty or I'll move on to some other new diesel by then. The only thing I would do is check for a dealer in Concord or Manchester for a tech. that knows something about the engine. Medlyn Motors in Milford is who I have always used for my jeeps over the years, they only sell Jeeps. Milford is a ride from Northwood though, as you probably already know. Good Luck.

If you would buy a Jeep Liberty CRD after reading this forum then I assume you are comfortable with the repair history, i.e. torque converter, egr, etc.

I would not purchase if I had this knowledge beforehand.

Heard of any egr repairs since ULSD came out? I haven't. The 2005 has a recall to fix the TC, the 2006 doesn't have the problem.

Are you sure about that? I had understood that only the really late production 2006 models are so far unaffected by the F37. Darby Walters has an 06 and is affected by F37.

Yea, I failed to mention the 10/05 cut off date. All after that have the 2006 TC ond not the '05.

Remember how some 64 1/2 mustangs got generators and the later ones got alternators. Same thing. Just using up parts laying around. Course, you would have to be my or oldnavy's age to know that unless you are a stang freak like me.

Not many... I haven't seen anything yet.

DCX should give us all new EGRs and flow control valves. now that ULSD is out. Most of my miles have been piled on running ULSD though. I got mine in June '06 and didn't really start driving it until September '06.

11k now.

I test drove 2 today. The first was interesting. I have dealt with the dealer before so no sales guy ride alongs. At first very little diesel noise, no turbo noise, but no power. It felt like a loaded brick with a gutless motor. At this point I was wondering were the power was. I took off into an abandoned parking lot and put into 4 part time and then 4 lo. Suddenly in 4 lo the motor came alive. Nice manners in 4x4, it does have tendency to doughnut on ice, probably due to the short wheelbase. When I put it back into 2 it was a different truck then at first. Full of power, nice diesel growl and I could hear the turbo, it blew off the line. Was it in limp mode? no CELs just no power.
The second was alright, didn't seem to have as much power, but the sales guy rode along, so it was flat boring roads. Honestly how can you make an informed decision if you drove for 15 minutes?
Overall I was impressed but skeptical. Both were one owner off lease, I know the first one hasn't had the f37, not sure but doubtful on the second. The interior was much bigger than I expected, and didn't feel as cheap as the new Dakotas.
Decent off road, I went a little bit up a snowmobile trail with the first one. But man those tires are pointless. Also no trailer hitch, does jeep sell them or are they just after market?

You have a point. I think I'm overly excited about this. Since I have been such a diesel proponent. These seemed perfect.

Are you currently at USNA?
My sister in law and her husband graduated in 04. Wareing and Eagan.

Should be OK. They are self cleaning if you do away with the LSD. Boy, you sure can tell who owns a 2005 model on here. :)
