If you are doing any serious off roading you need to have the tranny skid to both protect the FUMOTO and the oil filter. The oil filter is pretty tough and would survive most mud or soft ground impacts, the FUMOTO would be ok in mud, but clumps or hard dirt could break it if hit hard enough. I would invest in the tranny skid even if only driving on gravel. Actually I would have the tranny & transfer case skids if it was never off the highway like ours. Road 'gators can be rough on a vehicle, one did $2000 damage to the Magnum this past December. Lucky fo me the oil filter is mounted above oil pan on front of engine, and the engine is high in the engine bay designed for 6.1L V8 and just had a couple of light tread marks on the pan. Needed some suspension parts, new lower engine cover, a/c condesor, front bumper, grill and front end alignment.

Are you speaking methaphorically, or did you actually hit a "gator"? You sig say swampeast? Are there gators in SE Missou?
Hahahahah!!! No 'gator's that I know of, "road gators's" has always refered to semi-truck treads on the road way, first heard it called that in the '70's in SC of all places by a GA boy who I worked with at Ft Jackson. SE MO used to be a swamp before it was drained. I still remember the cypress tress and swamp rabbit hunting. The draining started durring the depression and was started back up in 60's I think and has been pretty much completed and all the swamp area's have been turned into farms for cotton and rice mostly. There are networks of drannage ditches/cannals and hold ponds all across this area. Thanks to the popularity of rice farming in this area the dreaded blood sucking mosquito is back with a vengence after almost disappearing in the late 60's to early '70's due to loss of habitat.

Well I was wondering, you being close to Arkansas, and there are gators there. Mighta been some crawl up there. I never been in your neck of the woods, and certainly never east of the Mississippi.
You ain't missing nothin'.

These washers go hard with time. Just anneal it and your good to go. Do this by heating it 'til red hot and then quench it in cold water.

I have a Fumoto, but decided not to put it on at my first oil change.
It hangs out and down way to far for driving in PA.
Too risky for getting it knocked off or damaged.
BTW, the engine oil drains out just fine thru the hole in the skid
and IMHO the Fumoto is not really needed.
It might even hinder oil drain flow.

I think we want it soft so that is is maleable. Hard is good for longer life, but not so good for sealing. One time soft is a good thing.

Hehehe, silly boy. You need to do a little more research on the drain and look at the oil pan pictures. But hey you're intitled to your opinion.

I gotta admit - it looks like it would hang lower than anything else. I dont have a skidplates so I am sure a retread would rip that sucker right off.

Yes I would bot run it with out the $43 skid plate installed. Those road 'gators can be rough on a car for sure, one did $2000 in damage to the Magnum in Dec and I was lucky to say the least.

So you're referring to a skid plate in addition to the factory skids? If so, would you be so kind as to give me specifics (brand, model, etc.) on the $43 skid plate you are referring to?
Thanks

yes I was refering to OEM tranny skid plate that covers the back half of the oil pan (where oil drain plug is located), oil filter, and all of the tranny.

Oldnavy, IF I don't get the valve, will it still be easy to access the stock drain plug with the skid on?

Yes if you have the proper tools.

Hey I saw a neighbor one time trying to change his oil with a pair of channel locks while he had the car jack up with the bumper jack.

Hey if it still has the 8 mm hex key bolt go to dealer and order the new bolt that takes a regular socket, not sure of the socket size though.

It still has the hex. Everything seems to be in good shape after 5 oil changes. I'll probably go with the valve once I get the skids on abd take a look see at things. My dad had a 1964 Dodge up on a car bumper jack working on something. I was 11 at the time and the thing fell on him. I freaked and picked up the front of the car so he could get out. Corn fed Kansas boy don't you know. I once had to use channel locks to get an oil drain plug off. It was on a 64 Falcon and the vise grips seemed to be the tool of choice for the previous owner. There was barely anything to grab onto.
