Recommended Break-In?

As I've stated elsewhere, I don't have an owner's manual for my CRD yet.

Could someone please let me know what the recommended break-in technique and period is?

All I know is the dealer told me not to go over 60 mph for the first 1,000 miles.

But when I get home I will go through my owners manual and see if it says anything else about breaking in. Also you can purchase a manual on EBAY for pretty cheap 5.00 - 10.00 bucks.

I didn't worry about it. Most engines are broken in at the factory nowadays. I rag mine quite a bit and it's doing great

Well I am home but I don't see anything in the owners manual about breaking it in BUT I have a gas not a diesel I don't know if that really makes a diffrence? I just know your gas is cheaper then mine :lol:

I was easy on mine for the first 500 miles. no more than 50% throttle. For the next 500 I occasionally "got on it" but only off a light and for very short intervals. Do not set the cruise on the highway; allow your speed to increase and decrease +/- 5mph.

After 1k you should be all set.

This is kind of old school thinking, but it makes sense as well.

But as mentioned, the engines were run at the factory, on the way to your dealer, then at your dealer. If it did not break yet, you should be fine.

I wouldn't worry about it, it's a diesel. Think the truckers baby their trucks for the first 1000 miles? Nope, they put the coals to them. We light load them for a while to wear the cam in, then load the engine worse than they ever would on a dyno to check it before we gave it to them.

The manual says go 55 or below the first 300 miles but do tromp on the thottle and accelerate, within the limits of the law, up to 55 MPH to simulate actual usage. But never tromp on the accelerator from a stop. The break in is recommened but it is brief and after 300 you can do what you want, even outside the limits of the law. Even the good diesels need lubed and the valves configured via a mellow break-in, with some "punching it" thrown in here and there. At least that is what my Jeep CRD owners manual says

That's good to know. My '04 Dakota that I traded in for the CRD had basically the same break-in requirements, and for lack of any other guidance, that's what I followed. Guess I was holding my mouth right. :lol:

Guess it really didn't make much difference in the end, when we picked it up at the dealer it already had 240 miles on it. Originally went to a dealer in Charleston SC, then transferred to one in Florence SC, then up to the one in NC we bought it from. Just hope they followed the same requirements when moving it around.
