I don't know if the shift kit for the 42rle is actually out yet. That could be the delay in a response. I think dieselenthusiest is the guinee pig on it. I wonder if he has gotten it installed yet.

I have the KIT, but haven’t had the time to get it installed. I was thinking yesterday that someone is going to post a note on this thread wanting to know how I liked the Shift Kit. And what happens? I check my e-mail today and here you guys are. I’ll try really hard to get it installed ASAP. The more I drive it, the more it reminds me how sloppy the shifting is. If I have time, I will post a photo of the Shift Kit so you guys can see how basic it really is. It’s not a full blown Kit as what came for the older Liberty’s, but according to Wayne, it didn’t need as much modifications either. This is why I think Wayne said he thought this was a better built transmission. Not that the Transmission is necessarily a stronger built trany, but it was designed a little better thus reducing the need for more modifications to make it shift the way it needs to. Now, the Torque Converter on the other hand is a different story. A new and improved T.C. with the Shift Kit would be a nice set up.

It will make a very nice improvement. You'll really enjoy driving it if you're a spirited driver. I would recommend getting your PCM flashed to realize the entire improvements. Also, the stock PCM didn't like it much once I went to a stall converter and 4.10 gears. It didn't shift at the right places even after clearing the adaptives and it would bog down instead of launching. After getting it flashed if shifted like a sport truck, launched really well, and it made an extra 40 rwhp with N2O and the same jets.

Please take some pics and note the procedure if you do not care. Tearing into a tranny is the only thing I do not feel good doing on my own, but I do not like letting other people work on my Jeep. :)

I feel the same way about getting into the tranny. So if i feel like i'm in over my head i'm going to get the guys at a local shop to do it, and hopefully they'll let me hang out and watch.

Either way, i'll take pics of the kit when it arrives and scan/post any instructions that come with it.

Boi1ermaker, upgrading your torque converter will actually help alot. I would get the B&G flash first though. Especially if you change the stall or torque multiplier by very much. When you get your torque converter, discuss what you want with Wayne. They'll set it up for your application. I wanted to be able to launch it hard, and immediately be in the power band, so they raised the 1.93:1 torque multiplier to 2.53:1 and set it up with a stall a little over 2500 RPM.

JeepJeepster, take your Jeep over to Rusty at Cottman Transmission on Winchester Rd. He's does all my transmission and differential work. He's really good and has worked on a ton of Jeeps.

Wayne emailed me back in just one day! just need to find the time to order the kit tomorrow and then see how it goes, if I just put in the shift kit do I still need to get the PCM flashed? First shift kit I ever installed was in 1975, do you think anything has changed in that time

You don't have to get your PCM flashed. I recommend it as one of your first upgrades though because it will help everything else work, and it is a very nice upgrade itself. When I went to a stall converter and 4.10 gears, the PCM didn't like it very well. Torque management issues and bad shifting. It also wouldn't launch hard at all. I did the shift kit after getting the flash, but it should work fine without the flash.

dieselenthusiast, what's TransGo's model number for the kit? Is it the SK 604?

i must have caught Wayne the first day back from being away the first time i called. When i called back, he had emailed me the ordering info faster than i could walk across the room to my computer. Really nice guy, and when i get to the point to where i'm considering the TC, i'll know he'll take the time to talk to me about what he can do for me.

btw, KYLiberty, thanks for the response on the TC. The flash is on my to do list and it moved up from near the bottom to being one of my next two mods (the fastman tb being the other possibility). I have some questions about it, but i'm going to ask them in your sticky in the 4x2 performance section so i don't hijack this thread.

You all will be amazed at how much difference the transmission performance makes in your Jeeps. I really like the way mine drives now.

Does it qualify as slick? 8)

Good News :!: I finally have found a transmission shop (super reputable) that I feel confident in. :D Likewise, the mechanic is also feeling very confident and very ready to install my shift Kit. I’m really pumped as this guy does nothing but transmission building, rebuilding, and knows these bad boy tranys like the back of his hand. This is awesome :!: My Dodge Cummins is NEXT on the LIST :!: It really does feel good to know someone who can get the job done and stand behind it 100%. He says he installs TransGo shift kits in transmissions all the time. So it’s kinda nice to know that he already has a good relationship with TransGo. He’s very familiar with our Liberty Kit as it’s application also fit’s the 604, 42LE, and 42RLE + or - some parts. He’s excited to put this Kit into the newer Liberty as it is brand spankin new! So next week I hope to have this baby installed. My wife is worried about the warranty. But he says, “No worry, the factory wont know we were ever in there.” I’ll keep everybody informed once we can pinpoint a time next week to get this Kit installed. Unfortunately it’s an hour and half away, so it’s going to take some planning as I work nights and my wife works days.
