03-04.5 trucks seem to get better mileage for the most part.

That's true.
The 2003--2004's (305/555's) have only 2 injection events. The 2004.5's (325/610's) and newer have 3 injection events.

As far a fuel mileage look at this link. In this tread one of the trucks has over 800 hp and over1400 ft/lbs of torque. And he got 18.6 mpg going to the event. I'd say that is pretty good.

The Dodge truck is a TRUCK. It has many creature comforts but mine weighs in at around 7700lbs. This is some thing you may want to concider when "upsizing". You will still get that chug along power that we love in our Diesels but you may get that "what have I done" feeling when you go to whip it around corners, try to park it in small lots and relize it doesn't fit in your garage. Over all I wouldn't want to have to choose, but we have a soccer mom and contractor dad setup. I would hold out for a 6 speed manual on the Dodge. I knew going into the truck purchase that an auto tranny was not in the equation. This will take out some of the creature comfort... but you get to select what gear to use chug up the hills. Oversize your Dodge tires to 285/75 R17's and you'll get even better mileage due to the lower RPM's at cruise. Too large of a tire creates too much rolling resistance. We upsized the CRD tires to Kuhmo's 245/70 R16 KL78's and the ride improved 95% over the stockers.
