Ok, I know I'm not crazy. A couple of years ago DCX build some KJs, maybe Renegades, with different hoods. They didn't have the ridges behind the headlights, it was more like a JK hood & grille, but before the JK pics came out. I finally saw one the other day on the road, but there don't seem to be very many.

Anyone know the story on these oddball KJs?

Those are the renegades, and I think the Rocky MTN editions had the same hood as well.

The Renes starting on 05 had a different front end. It consisted of a redesigned grille, bumper and the flat hood. IMO it is great looking and I would love to convert my wifes 04 over to that style.

There is for sure some other trim package that has that setup as well. I saw one the other day, but it wasnt a rene and didnt seem to have any special badge on it, like rocky mtn or latitude or anything like that. So I have no idea what it was...

Latitude has the stupid curvy hood. I'm pretty sure the Rocky Mountain has a curvy hood as well. I think that they should just make the flat hood OE on all KJs, it looks so much Jeepier.

Actually, I love the way the flat hood looks on the rene with the fogs on the bumper and the light bar and everything. But when I saw it on that other model, it looked really wimpy. Made the Jeep look smaller and less tough. Wierd.

I own a 05 Renegade with the "Flat Hood" (yes it was a factory option) , they are fairly uncommon. I know they dont make them any more, its a shame i think they look much better than the stock Hoods, and is why i bought this particular car. However mine is an oddity because it has the full Renegade package, but without the light bar (which i think is dorkey, there are WAY better aftermarket ones), anaway here is a pic

Indeed. I hate the contoured hood on most KJs. Not enough to make me hate the vehicle as a whole, but that is one thing that I really really hate about them. Like the D30a, except purely cosmetic. I think that the flat hood looks at least 1000 times better than the contoured hood. It gives it a more badass profile that doesn't scream "Cute-Ute!"-a jeepier profile if you will. Again, this is all purely cosmetic and highly subjective, just my opinion :) .

I like both versions but the flat hood screams JEEP! Since I like both, I will keep one of my KJ's stock and try to convert the other to the flat hood and different front end sheet metal some day.

at least us with the curvy hoods can see over them, why would you want your liberty looking like just another jeep with impaired visibility?

I have the curvy hood. I don't like it. I don't think it looks good, but it's 100% opinion. And everyone is entitled to their opinion, no matter how stupid it is  . I just happen to prefer the flat hood to the curvy hood. Chances are that if the flat hood was standard and the curvy hood was optional I would like the curvy one since I wouldn't see it all the time. Actually, I'm pretty sure I don't like the contrast color grille now that I think about it, and most of the flat-hooded jeeps I'v seen have body color grilles.
