Yeah, she was in 4 hi. The housing didn't crack but the the guts self destructed. I suppose it could have been either a faulty part or factory installation goof.

I have to ask why they paid for all of this. I mean you did do the damage yourself and was not a factory defect. I'm sorry, but this is why we end up paying so much and getting so little. When I was 16 and ripped the third member out of my dads bronco it was lawns, and a lot of extra work to replace it. Sorry for the bad feelings but maybe when you grow up and have to start to pay for things you wil understand where I'm coming from.

My first car was a 67 pontiac la mans. drove that for a long time until I bought a 81cj7, It was stolen later. Bought a 1969 cj5 that took me 2 years to rebuld. I love that jeep so much, I till have it today. I don't have any problems with the parents helping out, its there money. But I have a problem with the dealer covering all cost.

Agree with you both tjkj2002 and rockjeep, bought my first one working in hay fields baling hay, then milking cows and shoveling ....well you know, all the while dreaming about what I was buying.....56 vehicles later still paying for them all and fixing all the broken parts, if I break them, makes you learn to respect things a whole lot more!

Sounds like a failed part to me. What's the problem?

What he described as happening to him could have happened to anyone-- plenty of people have broke this part. Your assumption that something else happened and your badgering of him is simply ageism. I suppose if he was a woman or a race you don't like that would have been the reason the part broke. Why don't you find something else to do besides harrassing new members of the site?

I tend to agree. Failed part. Just because he's inexperienced doesn't mean he needs to pay for a weak part. Sounded to me from his post that he got the sugar scared out of him anyway. he learned.

Besides, SEVERAL folks on this board, much much older than him, did the same thing while off roading and broke the same part. Too much skinny pedal. Then there were the failures of this part, like the one at Camp Jeep that happened RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE JEEP ENGINEERS! No driver error. Jeep "borrowed" the vehicle to inspect it. No age issues there.

Oh, and one more thing: when my front end's bearings went out while under warranty, the mechanic at the dealer told me that the gears weren't set right - not even close! So maybe there's more going on here than just a weak aluminum diff. Maybe several were installed wrong allowing for excess stress under a relatively normal off road situation (losing and regaining traction suddenly). Just a thought.

Oh, and for the record, I have a collar and I now try not to gas it up those hills if the front end is bouncing! See, I learned too and I'm, well, much more than twice his age!

The tragedy here is you have to drive your 'Jeep' like a freaking car so you don't 'mess it up' when wheelin'. I understand that doing crazy stuff is going to break your rig but there is definantly an engineering flaw at work here.

So, I don't think he is a baby at all, in fact, I am glad the Jeep took care of him. I guess I should have forked out the money for a new diff because mine failed in a rain storm because it was the right thing to do. Baahh. I used to pound the crap out of my '79 CJ and it NEVER broke. So, if Jeep wants to under-engineer a product, as long as they are willing to fix the failures, then it is just a game that the accountants are playing. They figure that the cost to manufacture the cheaper parts are less than what they are going to have to pay in repairs so it makes economic sense. If their goal was to build a strong, offroad machine, we would not be posting this at all.

Just like you said. Its not designed to be full throttle then get traction and expect to hold up. If it had been a break under normal conditions then yes warranty time. But he clearly said that he put it under abnormal conditions that caused a failure. I guess that I should have had dodge cover the transmission that I blew up. Even though I was abusing it and had modified the truck to over 600 hp and was doing a burn out contest. But I maned up and covered my losses, I could have said that it just went out on the road.

Does anyone have pics of a blown up diff?

I can imagine how it happens, but wow.

If someone can post a link to the thread about the collars....

Just a side note, I was visiting my mom at the stables and the rear wheel was spinning in the mud, while stopped I stuck it into 4hi and was out.

the LONG thread on the group buy, complete with pictures, is here. I started it so you can search on my threads. I forget, but maybe it was last summer.
