A while back there were topics about orangey color residue at the oil cap. The general consensies was that it was vapor mixed with the oil and short trips, like going to the bank.

I had that for two oil changes and I was using the mobil 1 when I first got my KJ. Then I noticed that there is a Mobil 1 for Trucks and SUV's. So I have been using that for 3 oil changes now, and that residue has not been present at all. I have not changed my driving habits and one oil change included a 3400 mile trip.

I just did another (4 in all now) oil change and still no residue. So maybe this newer oil works better in our KJ's. Just sharing my observation. I found this oil at wal-mart. I change my oil between 4-5k.

Thats the oil I use in my kj and my ranger, I also use mobil 1 in my focus st, just not the truck and suv blend. I've used mobil 1 for years and I'm quit happy with it.

That's wierd. It doesn't seem like that would affect whether you have residue or not. I wonder what the differences are between regular mobil 1 and the Truck/SUV version?

i dont think either of those mobil 1 oils are fully synthetic anymore. despite what the labels say, most are now mostly mineral oil based, base III not IV

i would believe they are fully synthetic. A big company would not claim that and not be true. they would have to call it a synthetic blend.

Chris

I swear by Mobil 1 and its all i use. i go anywhere from 7500 miles to 9000 or so.

Actually, all the rules for what can be called a synthetic oil changed when Castrol won against Mobil in a suit Mobil filed against Castrols Syntec line which Isn't a full synthetic. Other companies followed suit and started making hydrocracked dino oil "synthetics" and not full synthetic basestock oils like Amsoil. Mobil Extended Performance is their full syn oil and their others I am not quite sure on but you can imagine what they are using in order to make more profit by building an oil to a price point and not a performance point. If you want the best for your engine & drivetrain, use Amsoil products made with a full synthetic base stock and no hydrocracked dino oils.

Mobil 1 EP will only say it can go to 15,000 miles where Amsoil has a Guaranteed 25,000 mile full syn and 35,000 mile syn too. Amsoil was first in FULL Synthetics and is still First in performance against all others. It has been proven since 1972, the others just can't compete.

Well, what can I say, JJsKJ is right. Every independent test has put Amsoil above the competition every time. Amsoil has been tested the lowest wear scar. 8) Mobil 1 has been in trouble a few times for misleading advertising. That’s why Amsoil isn’t sold at Wal-Mart. Amsoil is sold through independent dealers such as JJsKJ because Amsoil wants you to be educated on what you are using. :D There are too many misconceptions between off the shelf oils. Just like the factory transmission oil that our Liberty’s are using. Jeep says the transmission oil is good for 100,000 miles. I’d change it no later than 30,000 miles. It’s not the oil as much as the additives that they add to the oil that screws everything up. Let me give you an example of how important additives can make or brake performance. I drive a Dodge Cummins and due to the higher temperatures that diesels reach, they require good oil with substantial additives that can handle high heat. I believe that AMSOIL in this scenario is very crucial. Royal Purple (a high quality oil) had been rejected by Cummins INC. due to excessive valve train wear. Royal purple uses an additive called Molybdenum Disulfide or also known as (Moly). Although MOLY is a good lubricator, it can (under conditions) lose it’s harmony with the oil. The MOLY instability in the oil creates chaos. Mopar’s so called 100,000 mile oil falls into this same category. Instead of using a good quality base oil, they put additives in it to perform at a higher level. But it doesn’t work for the long term drain intervals. There are so many factors such as high heat, condensation, and driving conditions that can effect the quality of transmission oil and its additives. Once those additives lose their stability and agglomerate, then you can count on your fluid as being out of harmony. Take it for what you think it’s worth, but its good food for thought.

you cant believe someone based on how big their company is, irrelavant. their oil has been tested and yes some of their fully synthetic blends are mostly non synthetic mineral oil.

it pissed me off too but i dont think ill be gettin a lawyer to do anything about it like everyone else.

go amsoil, from now on, thats ALL ill be buying.

FWIW, Neither of the above comments were solicited by me. Neither of the authors are customers of mine either, though I wish they were. :D

Take a look at ExxonMobil's profits from the last few years and imagine what is on their mind. ($$$) They could make The superior full synthetic oil and practically give it away, driving away any competition but will/do they? No. Why? Mo money, mo money, mo money!
If they really cared about the consumer they would make the best oil on the market. If you consider that they are one of the largest oil companies and they have access to all the same materials and technology that Amsoil does, WTH don't they make an even better oil that would beat Amsoil in testing? I guess they just don't care.

I will say that they (Mobil1) do make an ok product that I have used in the past but I also say that you can do So much better for comparable (or less overall, long term) cost and with a time savings bonus so why not do it?

Amsoil is specifically engineered to last longer and go farther and there are many people running 100's of thousands of miles on Amsoil products using the by-pass filtration systems and oil condition monitoring. Their products continue to test fine in extended service intervals of 25-35,000 miles and the competitions don't. .......... ooops......there I go again........ I just can't stop once I get started....now back to our regularly scheduled show on Jeep stuff....

Sorry if I helped this stray a little OT.

As far as the residue in the oil cap, I think it has more to do with the climate where you drive, the functioning of the PCV system, and the length of your trips more than the oil you use. It has been reported here that the "gunk" shows up in all kinds of situations, different mileages, oils, environments, etc. I have seen the gunk w/ Mobil1, dino oil, Amsoil, etc. and I have seen it in a couple different environments. I saw it early on my 03 KJ when I was using Mobil 1 (dealer upgraded my free oil change for me) but it was a very wet year then and my commute is really short. I never did see it again once i cleaned it out and that was with the Mobil1 still in there. I personally have not seen it in any of my vehicles since switching to Amsoil products even on extended service intervals.

I am not sure if we will ever know the true cause of the Gunk (sure it is condensation related) but hopefuly it isn't something that will cause us any problems in the future.

Do you have proof that Mobile 1 is not full synthetic?

ExxonMobil 1 is a Group III oil. It ceased being a PURE (less additive package) Group IV PAO oil after the Exxon takeover. The Exxon info page states that Mobil 1 uses high performance fluids, including polyalphaolefins. I think the wording is meant to carefully imply that Mobil 1 is mostly PAO (Group IV oils) but this is not really the case....if it was still Group IV, they'd say so.

The terminology of "full synthetic", "pure synthetic", etc... is not as relevant these days as the protection the oil provides to your engine. Many Group II hydro-isomerized oils with appropriate additive packes protect the engine just or almost as well as polyalphaolefins or diester/polyester/alkanapthalen-benzene (Group V's), just that the additive package wears out and the viscosity index degrades (Group IV and V's have better base VI performance and need less additives generally to meed the same viscosity performance.)

I used to be a die-hard Delvac 1 guy for my TDI, but for about three years now (since Wal-Mart stopped carrying Delvac 1 in Canada) I have used AMSOIL, PetroCan Duron, RedLine and currently Delo 400 Synth 5w-40 oils with great success.

First and foremost consider the OEM requirements...if it says CJ-4, well....CJ-4 it should get. I would follow that up with UOAs to confirm whether you can extend the drain period of your oil.

Cheers,
Duey

All of this reminds me of discussing religion, any body can tell you anything they want to and say its in the Bible! Yes if you take every 3rd word subtract two from that and add one then yes it does say whatever you want it to say. BUt I have ran vehicles over 275,000 miles with Mobil One and they were still as good as day one. No doubt Amsoil is good, but will it make your vehicle go 500,000 or more just because you used it? Yes you have extended intervals....MAYBE, but I still am not TOTALLY convinced, all I hear are if and and a lot of buts. I first was introduced to Amsoil 20 years ago at my house, but the guys truck threw a rod backing out of my driveway.........................

http://theoildrop.server101.com/forums/search.php?Cat=0

there is enough evidence to support it that i wont be using it anymore.

from what i understand its the "extended performance" ones that are the worst.

but in my not so humble, valuable opinion, keep an eye out for any so called fully synthetic that says its good for 7500 or less, they are obviously inferior. real, quality, fully sythethic oils are good for at least 25000 if you have a good filter.

How about a 409,000 mile oil change interval. Read this for starters:

I think first and foremost the oil you choose to use must be ASI certified. From what I have read, only one amsoil is. I have read that either A:they don't want to pay for the cost to get certified, or B: they can't get certified with some of their oils because they will burn out catalytic converters due to high content of something, sulfur maybe. I have no idea about any of this about amsoil, I would probably use it if it was at a local shop. I hate to wait for shipping....
The nice thing about the Mobil1 suv/truck, is that it is the same price as the regular Mobil1 if you buy it in the 5 quart container at walmart.
Use an ASI certified oil and change frequently and you will do well I believe. Skip the long interval stuff....I enjoy changing my oil. 5000 miles with Mobil1 truck/suv and wix filter. My last vehicle went 225,000 with mobil1 and still runs well. The rest of the vehicle fell apart...
