Roof Top Tent

Found a nice site it's about roof top tents they where basically developed in Africa. The biggest problem their was the fact that Heyenas ( being a scavenger ) have been known to enter a camp and some unlucky soul has lost half their face . Obviously there are a few other nasty's wandering around at times. It would be really nice to have one of this especially it you are stuck in a flash flood style rain fall. www.autohomeus.com/

http://www.hannibal.ca They have an American supplier to......definitely a serious rooftop tent. These also come witrh pillows and matress....do NOT leak, and are set up in about 3-4 minutes.

As I run an Expedition Group these things are important.....anyway, heres some pics from the Hannibal site.....

Is that high enough to be safe from a black bear or a grizzly bear? Looks like they would either climb up that ladder, or just swipe it down. Also, had a full grown moose try to get in our giant Starcraft pop-up camper in Yellowstone years ago (slept 8 adults, it was huge). Tha moose tried to push us over and almost got his head through the canvas sides - and it was TALL!

Adventure Trailer uses the Overland if I remember right. Don't know how well the tent works in the wet weather of the Pacific NW so I haven't bought one or their trailer. E mailed them, but the answer I got wasn't really reassuring. You only see pictures of these things in some desert or something.

Would you rather be on the ground in a tent? Obviously, this is a lot safer than in a tent on the ground. Just think, no ants (especially Fire Ants).....until they discover a route there.

Snakes, spiders, and scorpions are less likely to be in your sleeping bags.

Disadvantage......loss of roof rack for additional camping gear, spare tire, or whatever else.

super old post, but i thought i'd comment...my family and i have run an autohome "maggiolina" tent for about 4 years now.

1. sets up in 1 minute
2. is VERY MUCH waterproof
3. is windproof
4. matress is comfy as all get-out
5. ladder access leaves something to be desired.
6. getting out to pee in the middle of the night sucks.
7. fibreglass shell is VERY durable
8. square u-bolt mounting to thule bars is VERY strong/durable
9. i'm 6' 260lbs and i fit just fine.

that is all.

I thought that the weight limit for the roof is 150lbs? I'd like to have a tent like that, but I exceed that number by a good margin. I'd like to have an adventure trailer too, but it exceeds my budget by a good margin.

I do believe it is the stock rails that could handle only 150 lbs, not the roof. If you notice, the rails are replaced in that one pictured above.

I've actually done alot of research on these. The 150lbs rating is a dynamic rating i.e. 150lbs is the max for a vehicle moving 60-70mph down the road. The static load for a 150lbs roof rack (sitting still) is much higher (not sure how much higher for Liberty). The companies all say that vehicle's stock roof racks should be fine (notice top picture). You do need crossbars. Hope that helps

I am in the planning stages of getting a 1/4 ton military trailer or building a trailer out of the back half of a wrangler and mounting one of these to that, still up off the ground, stores away with the trailer, have plenty of space to haul supplies etc. Any good / bad points along those lines? I know i could just get an Adventure trailer but...too many $$$ for 20 0r 30 nights a year!

No. A griz could rip the whole Jeep apart. When we were in Alaska, a saw some that could reach 10 feet easily.

Another reason to never keep the food with your sleeping quarters. Think about the Grizzly man. Forgot his name. Great movie/documetary on his life and works.

I think for the most part, you will be safe on the roof (raise the ladder if possible). Heck, almost everyone sleeps in tents on the ground so you would be one or two or three steps ahead of them (pun intended).

I was once told by an old trapper guy up in Alaska, that a grizz, or Brown bear up there, would never catch him because the bear would have a slicker trail than he would.

In the village where I was, the bears would come down right after hybernation and try to grab a dog for a quick snack. The kids go trick or treating in the daylight because it is unsafe after dark. My wife once called a
"bear day" at school because there were bears on the playground.
