Okay folks, I need to buy some oil for an upcoming change. It seems that the two premier, readily available brand of 5W-40 oil made for our engines are Mobil 1 TDT and Shell Rotella T. I know there has been a bit of talk about both brands, although none or very little about both by comparison.

I don't know the techno-specifics about either, and yes I've looked on the internet and over at BITOG but have found nothing in particular. What do you all think? I could buy either from my local Wally World among other stores for the same price...

Valvoline also has a new CI-4 Plus rated oil out in 5w-40. I think it is called Blue-Max or some such. I saw it at the local Napa. I am sticking with the Shell as it is the cheapest. If there is some compelling reason to switch, someone please let me know. I run 6000 mile intervals with the standard Mopar filter. After the F37 is done, I will run the ORM and that should lessen my worries considerably.

If I remember correctly, the Valvoline 5W40 is Premium Blue Extreme, Fleetguard is recommending it for their Cummins customers.

Any of these 5W40 diesel oils - Valvoline, Mobil 1, or Shell Rotella - would be good choices. There's also the new Amsoil 5W40 synthetic diesel oil that meets CJ -4 specs. Your money , your preference. :)

Anyone know when the New Synthetics will be out (ie Cj-4 Synthetic)? I thought I read something on shells site saying 2q 2007.

I voted Rotella. Mobil is more expensive and it's highly debatable that you're getting any better protection.

I voted Mobil, but if it wasn't available, I wouldn't hesitate to use the Rotella T.

Neither. Just got back from the dealer and this is what they use from bulk: 5W40 BP VISCO 5000. This and the MB oil are the only ones with low ash rating here. I have not be able to find any other that has this rating. I called DCX Germany and they also said this is the only oil that can be used within warranty specs here. $17.92 a liter X6 liters $107.52 for oil. $145.55 for an oil change and normal inspection of the vehicle. They do a complete inspection with each oil service. Oh and I supplied the filter as well. That is still up for debate on the warranty with them.

I use Amsoil HeavyDuty Diesel Series 3000. Although it is a 5w-30, it works great for our CRDs. Amsoil does have the new CJ for European cars but the HDD offers better protection, mileage and is engineered to trap soot. That with the Amsoil EaO34 oil filter is my combination.

An independent lab result on the "Ball Bearing test:

40kj pressure @150 C @ 1800 rpm for 1 hour

Amsoil HDD 5W-30 .378 wear scar mm
Duron SYN 5W-30 .636
Val Pre Blue 15w-40 .636
Mobil Delvac 1 5W-40 .648
Chevron Delo 15W-40 .690
Shell Rotella T 15W-40 .692
