I'm looking for information about this place, which is supposedly managed by the State of Indiana. Their website www.redbirdsra.com doesn't seem to be working.

Thanks in advance for your opinions and stories.

It works randomly for me. I've been watching the internet for users of this place. Thus far it seems to be the Quads and the big red neck beaters that go there (maybe because it is kind of primative and muddy). The giant Pinzauger stuck in the mud in thier logo/banner worries me...

Despite what looks like some pretty gnarly spots, the trail that these Land Rovers rode on back in June looks like fair game for a KJ. Check out the photos:

http://www.redbirdsra.com/gallerylandrover.htm

Whadya think? Anybody interested in an exploratory run with me, maybe first Saturday in October? Tom Wood is the dealership that organized the Land Rover run. I'm sure we could talk to someone there and get a trail map. Maybe ask some Land Rover folks show us the ropes. Who knows? We may convert a few!

Looks like the course was set up and temporary signs installed just for this by the dealership. Looks interesting though. The first Saturday in October is the 7th, which is the same as the Land Between The Lakes in Kentucky run that is happening. I'm not attending as this, and all other runs this year, have fallen every third week apart and as luck would have it, the same every third week that I'm a single parent.

Now, if you meant the first weekend in October (i.e. September 30 and October 1) I MIGHT be able to....???....

I keep looking at this place more and more. If you click on the aerial photo link I posted in the previous post, close the "welcome" window for a better view. You can just click-hold-drag to move the picture around. When you zoom in, the detail level is awesome.

Looks like there is a huge power line easement (i.e. cleared of trees) that would be cool to explore with lots of steep hills. This is only about 75 miles SW of my house, so closer for me than Attica, IN(the Badlands). This may become my new play spot!

They are open 9am-5pm Saturdays and Sundays only.
Admission is $10/person.
November 26 is the last day they are open for the 2006 season, then they close down for the winter and reopen in late March or early April.
No flags are required.

Keep me posted on dates. This looks like a long wheeling day from Dayton, but I'd like to try it.

Moose, Alljeep:

I need to check my schedule again. Last night, I committed to taping a series of Catholic school football games most Saturday mornings now through October 7. During that time, the earliest I could get to RedBird on a Saturday is noon/1:00. The good news is these football gigs can help pay for a lift kit.

I agree that the yellow and green Tom Wood signs look temporary. The orange signs on the right side of the picture below look like permananent trail markers.

I'll check with Tom Wood Land Rover about maybe getting some Land Rover folks to join as as trail guides, since this is new ground for Liberties. Having somebody who knows the terrain would be a big help.

Favorite pic. Wheeeeeeeeee!

Bump for renewed interest. See my above posts, the link to the aerial photo still works, just close (x-out) the Welcome box.

Last day of the season before closure is Sunday, November 26, 2006. My schedule this year is unreliable but someone could plan a Thanksgiving run???

Here is some info I got from Redbird SRA:

Quote:
The best tip I can offer at this time is you don't want to miss the upcoming night ride. November 11th-12, pay for sat & sun admission at $10.00/day, get bonus saturday night ride and camp primitive in parking lot sat night at no extra cost. You will meet many off-roaders to link up with and enjoy the trails with. There will be many different rigs here with varying degrees of experience. You can enjoy trails suited for your rig, and then hop in with someone who has on open seat in an extreme rig and see things some jeeps will never get a chance to encounter. Trail 14 is an excellent trail, it offers a view of the west side of the property and is technical but has been run by many stock rigs looking for that first experience. We had a group of Land Rovers do trail 14 earlier this year and they had a ball. Last month a pair of local ladies in a stock Nissan exterra were guided through trail 14 by a couple of the management group. They had soo much fun they are now members and work the gate on a regular basis. Heavy rain changes the attitude of our trails, you will get to see alot more if it has been dry a few days. In comparison to our other trails, we send new people on 14 first. Only trail 0 is easier than 14 at this time. Trail 3 and 21 offer some extreme sections that last weekend had some jeeps that were locked on both ends with good suspensions taking the bypasses out or winching. Again, you don't want to miss the night ride. Let me know if there is anything else we can do. Tim

My Nov is filling fast. I am going to KY on Nov 11 and will be hunting pheasent the following weekend. I will be in GA over Thanksgiving. It is looking like I will not make it to Redbird until next year.

I dug this up now that the new year is here. I also made another link, this one to the maps that google provides, VERY nice color aerial photography that you can really zoom down into:

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q ... iwloc=addr

Compare this with the "Redbird State Riding Area" image that I linked to above in my "Wed Sep 13, 2006 8:39 am" email and it's easy to see the limits of the Park.

I'm interested - I want to get out and explore that place - maybe it will dry out a little by May. I'll stick to the easier stuff the Land Rovers were on. Not up for big rocks or deep mud holes, but steep dirt trails looks good to me.

Redbird is mentioned in Offroad Adventures magazine this month as one recommended by BF Goodrich. Still like to get down there.

Dates that DON'T work for me:
June 2-3
July 21

Every other Saturday and Sunday are fair game.
