HELP! I think I'm getting ripped off (or lied to).....

So I take my Liberty in to get the ball joints replaced and front end alignment done, because I just installed my Rusty's coil lift. Well, today I get a call saying that "someone" hammered in the axle on the drivers front, and made getting the axle nut back on impossible

He told me that I have two options...he can attempt to remove threads and replace a "new" nut on the axle, or replace the entire axle at $900+.

I inspected in myself and am very suspicious. Why in the hell is he taking off the axle nut for a lower ball joint replacement? Is there any OFFICIAL literature from Jeep that explains the procedure to replace them? And finally, I think he is going to tell me that he can't fix it and I have to buy a new axle. Suggestions?

I'm in the military, about to deploy, and have a pregnant wife. I don't have time for stealership games. If anyone can help out, I would appreciate it.

ummmm sounds like his mistake, and thus his dollar to fix his mistake, you should have nothing to worry about since they are the one's that goofe up the recall...not you...

ADDENDUM

He said that the previous owner replaced the ball joints with aftermarket MOOGS, and that since I put the lift kit on he doesn't have to put the ball joints in but he will anyway. However, he insists that since there were aftermarket ball joints on it, and that the axle appears to be hammered in, that he isn't liable. I cannot prove that he messed the axle up, but I do know that all the busted threads are nice and clean, no rust, dirt etc....

Wow, kjsport hit it right on the head, you shouldn't have to pay for their mistake. I brought my old truck to a small repair shop and they cross-threaded the lug nuts on my 20" rims, I brought it back for them to take off and they tried to charge me a rediculous amount. After a phone call from my dad and him throwig the keys at me telling me not to come back, I didn't pay.

Well since they took the axle nut off then the threads where fine untill they pounded on the axle shaft to remove the knuckle to replace the LBJ's.You have to press it out not beat it out,they should know that.Go to JAG and see what they can do for you.Make them replace the whole CV shaft not repaire the one they messed up.

I would say they s*rewed it up since, since they have it off and cant get it back on, either that or it was like that from the factory. He maybe thinks since you have a lift on you will think whoever installed the lift messed it up! They may not have any idea how a lift goes on :lol:

check this out.........he told me that whoever did the lift and replaced the ball joints screwed them up, AND the previous owner pounded the shaft....

to which I told him that I installed the lift myself, and its only a strut lift. Didnt touch the ball joints. AND the lady that had it before me used it as a grocery getter.

"uh, well, uh.....well, Ive seen hundreds of these, and Im telling you someone pounded that shaft"

BTW dont fluff it up here, i need honest info....is it possible to take that nut off no problem but have it be impossible to get it on? He said that if someone pounded the shaft and the threads a certain way, it can come off easily but not go back on....

I've taken apart about a dozen half shafts - and I've never seen the situation he describes - nor do I understand how it could happen.

you might PM Jeeping Al - I think he's assembled disassembled more of these than most dealerships.

It was fine when you took it in - it's broken now - it's their responsibility,
but you might need a Lawyer to make the point stick.

Well,I can tell you that I change a couple of these a week,and I've removed some axle nuts,and thought I'd never get them back on.Sometimes you do get a shaft that has had a "Hack"working on it,and you'll need to take a thread file to the threads to clean them up before the nut will start.But,the key words here are "clean the threads up before you ruin someones axle".And instead of doing it the right way,he just chose to do it the fast way at your expense.Sounds to me like HE was the "Hack" here.I would tell him that the nut was on there when you left it,and it better be on there when you pick it up!We don't do things like this to people where I work.It's totaly imoral.

Yes after I read that it already had Moogs why replace them? Cant imagine that they would be bad, how many miles on the KJ?

You bought it use? How do you know for sure that it was not messed up when you bought it?

Now if you can say with a clear mind that it was not messed up and that he screwed with it he should fix it
and if all it needs is a c/v shaft then $90 for a rebuilt from an auto parts store with a waranty break it and just return it

I would try to get some "how to" info for the LBJ replacement first
then if he had no need to be in there he should pay even if it was messed up when he got it

he says that he has been there for 10 years, so for him to NOT know what MOOGS are would be pretty silly, but I can see him saying that he didnt know what they were, just that they were aftermarket.

no way that nut came off if the threads were bad, they mustve bashed the axle. MAKE THEM PAY

on an axle, no. Hardened steel, have to replace. he thinks that the little bit that is gone will be ok
