Hey folks,

For those of you who wheel with your dog in the vehicle, what do you do to secure your dog? Mine likes to move around alot inside the car, something that isn't too much of a problem on the highway but could be when I go wheeling. I look forward to taking her with me, but I don't want it to become a problem.

So what do you all do?

I have used a collar leash set up that hooks into a seat belt latch to keep our dog secure in the vehicle. Make sure to keep the window only slightly open when driving down the road or cruising faster off road as bugs and debris in a dogs eye or nose will cause you and your dog a lot of grief. You also don't want the dog to accidently get ejected out the window. Last time I saw the dog safety harness doohickey for a vehicle it was at Petsmart, not sure if they still have them though. My current dog doesn't like riding in the car so we have not bothered with it.

Lol, She does like to sit in the driver's seat.

JJ, cool, I'll keep an eye out for oen of those when I go to the pet store again. She's not much into sticking her head out the window so I don't even bother with those. She'd much rather sit in the middle, or in the front passenger seat, or on the passenger. Basically I just don't want her falling and breaking a leg. Rather spend money on the KJ then vet bills.

Lol, I have one of those too. Sadly it only works on the dog right?

The dog never complains and is always happy with what I give her. Of course, the only presents she ever gives me have to go in a plastic bag before it goes in the dumpster

The past our goldens(RIP) just sat in the back seat with the head out the window while wheeling, that or let them run out alonside the car. Depending on how your dog is trained you can let them be a "bird dog" and run out in front for you, did this with our last golden and he loved it, run along out front in road, wait for us to catchup, run out in front, wait to catch-up.

Are you worried that by leaving them in the backseat they will fall out or something?

Yeah, I'm mostly worried about her falling. She's only a year old so she's still learning and stuff. I've considered having her outside the vehicle, but she needs more training for that. Goldens are pretty awesome, she's actually 3/4 black lab, 1/4 golden (makes for less hair). I think I'll just take her out and see how she does, probably will make sure I have some stuff with me so I have some options depending on her behavior in the car.

In the three years we've been wheelin I think the dog has only stayed home once. He just rides in the back seat with his head out the window. Sometimes he gets bored and lays down, but either way no problems.

I usualy tell folks to leave the dog at home
I have found that most of them get in the way and tend to fall all over the place when you are climbing a good hill just what I have seen

Cool, I'll give it a shot with her and just see how she takes it.

SirSam, yeah she sure sheds alot, although I'm glad the hair is shorter. She had 3 litter-mates all were black. Good combo though, she's alot of fun.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Ya, Rielly(dog) sheds so much that if he scratches a big clump of hair comes back with his paw........its nuts. There will be huge clumps of hair all over the floor too!

My 1st was really too big to do anything but lay down when wheelin' (140lbs great dane). Now i have two of em' but haven't wheeled w/the little guy yet (115lbs, 9 month old). Will get em' out soon & see how they do together. May end up having to buy/lift an EXCURSION before it's all over.

My pooch just sits in the back and sleeps or helps me drive. Sometimes, I'll let him drive. This is him checking the clearance on the rock that I was spotting him over.

and this is him saying that he's sorry that he just slammed the chassis down on said rock

MP Jeeper, Great Danes are awesome dogs.

SnowgodCCR, got to give your dog credit for trying!

I'm gonna give it a shot with my dog, hopefully she'll just learn to get used to it and fall asleep in the back. She does that when we go on the highway.

Thanks,

Justin

Black Labs rule, got one lab and one Australian cattle dog (????mix). They just hang out in back of the jeep. The last time I was in Colorado I went camping with some friends. On the way up the trail one of my buddies dogs fell out of his TJ and she was leashed in. His dogs were in the back seat with the top off and we didnt even know she was dragging till the guys in the jeep following started yelling and honking and freaking out. We stopped and jumped out. She was a little scraped up and totally exhausted from trying to run and keep up with only her back legs touching the ground. That was really scary  ! She turned out to be OK and I think she learned to keep her but on the seat.

My set up is similar to JJ's. I've got a 6' leash looped through the middle car seat latch. Instead of a collar I hook it to her harness. I figure it spreads the weight more and won't pull on just her neck if she does start to slip. It keeps her from flying off the seat, jumping out the window and shedding all over the front seats.

About the Petsmart doohickey, the only inconvenient part is that it clicks into the seat belt. So if you dog steps on the button, they aren't connected anymore.

Nanette, Cool, I think I'll try the leash thing out, sounds cheaper. To my knowledge she hasn't stepped on the seat belt button, however when I drove to NM this xmas, she was sitting on my girlfriend's lap and kicked my car into neuteral. My dog's hair gets everywhere in the car, in the house I can sweep my hardwood floors twice a day and still pull up tons of hair.

Labman1, she is pretty awesome. She's like a black lab in desguise. People have remarked at dog parks that she has "mascara" around her eyes due to her Black Lab heritage. Australian cattle dogs are cool too, my parents have a Heeler/dachshund mix (much smaller than a regular heeler), she used to love to herd us.
