I have a 2004 KJ (5 speed) and just had the transmission rebuilt & the slave cylinder replaced. Also while it was in the shop I was informed my fuel pump needs to be replaced. I've been driving it for 3 days and it seems the problems with my transmission have NOT been fixed after all. Thank God it's still under warranty but I'm not impressed. I've owned (4) Jeep YJ's before buying the KJ and NEVER had a problem with any of them. Has anyone heard of tranny issues on the 5 speeds?

Thanks,
Elizabeth

Welcome to LOST ELIZCF18. I don't have the 5-speed. I wish I had the 6-speed they offer to the European diesel drivers, but alas. Anyway, I wish I could offer you some help, but I'm at a loss on this one. I do, however, think you'll have better results if you post this question in the General Discussion section.

Good luck on your search for answers! You've found the best place to look for them!

I own a 2003 with the 5-Speed and have not had any issues with it yet (knock on wood). Could you explain what issues you are experiencing with it so I know what signs to be on the lookout for? Thanks!

Hi there,

Well, it just kept getting better and better. LOL! In a span of two weeks Chrysler rebuilt my tranny, replaced my slave cylinder, fuel pump, and the entire clutch assembly. After replacing the tranny I still had the same problem as I originally had (the clutch would 'stutter' when starting off from a standstill and going from first gear to 2nd.) Although they said there was a problem with my 2nd gear I think they eventually realized the problem lay within the clutch. It was a case of 'who's on first' LOL. After all this everything seems to be fine but with a truck only 2 years old I'm a little weary. Thanks for responding! Have a great day!

Eliz

I have an '04 4X4 with a 5-speed which I bought used (year old, 11,000 miles). Since day one it's been a perfect Jeep with the tightest driveline ever, except for the noisy trans. It'd be quite as a vault if not for that. Twice I've mentioned it in the past and was told "it's the same trans as the Wrangler, they're all that noisy". A couple of weeks ago I took it back for the LBJ recall and 60,000 service and they said that something could be wrong with 1st or 2nd gear. But, of course, the trans needs to come out and opened up to see. At this point I'm pretty scared about it since there's only about 500 miles left on my warranty. Also, since they changed the fluids I now have back and forth drivetrain lash, with clunking sounds, which wasn't there before I brought it in.

It's scheduled for exploratory surgery this Monday and I'm concerned that I'll be a victim of escalating costs.

Elizabeth, how many miles on yours when it was rebuilt?

Hi there!

Sadly, I only had about 40,000 kilometers on mine...... I'm inclined to suggest you have Chrysler take a look at it as it was another mechanic who also spotted a problem with mine to start. I think in a year or two to come, there will be a recall on this tranny as it was changed for the 2005 models. :(

Please keep me posted on how it goes and I wish you good luck. Get the work done while it's under warranty as it'll cost and arm and leg if you wait too long.

Keep me in loop,
Elizabeth

72,000+ miles and the motor and tranny (5-Speed) are still running strong (knock on wood).
