Selec-trac 4WD shifting query

Dear LOST Friends,

I'm new to 4WD and just bought a 2005 Liberty Sport CRD with Selec-trac.
I have five acres to practice on in the Texas Hill Country and will need it as I have never used a 4x4. And, this is my first post.

My question is can I shift from 2WD right past 4WD part time and into 4WD full time or must I engage 4WD part time before going to full time? I seems I should be able to go right to 4WD full time and it should be the first shift option instead of the first option being part time 4WD with its locked differential.

I've read everything, including my owners manual, and this is not addresssed. Similarly, can I shift from full time 4WD directly to 2WD? That move would have me shifting right past part time 4WD.

Is there any good reason why 4WD part time is the first shist position after 2WD?---instead of 4WD full time?

You can shift from 2 wheel to 4 part time to 4 full time all in one stroke, just let off te gas 1st. I have the same transfer case as you do. I would say that 4 part time is 1st because if you are srarting to get stuck you cn get it into 4 wheel quicker. And, WELCOME!

Perfect 4 wheeling country. It is just below the Edwards Aquifer Escarpment. Thanks for the easy explanation

As Edwin said, yes, you can shift straight through part-time in both directions. When going from 4wd to 2wd, be sure to give it a little straight line distance before making any turns, or the t-case can bind up. I usually try to go about 20 feet in a straight line after shifting out of 4wd before I turn.

Oh, and if you need anyone else to come "practice" with you on your 5 acres I'm sure there's a few here in Texas that wouldn't mind.

4 Part Time comes first due to the t-case design. It has to engage the front axle drive in the t-case before the center differential can be unlocked. Otherwise, we'd be looking at a twin-stick t-case shifter...which wouldn't be all bad... :twisted:

Here's another trick:
If you have trouble getting out of 4WD and into 2WD due to space limitations (ie, pulling out of your garage or parking space, and you came home in 4WD but now want 2WD) and when you're pulling out, you hear and feel it binding up because the t-case won't "let go" of the front wheels, well, with the Selec Trac, you can GO BACK into Full Time 4WD! Finish backing out and get to a straight area THEN go to 2WD.

As mentioned earlier, just becuase you put the lever to 2WD, don't mean the t-case has let go fo the front axles, so you'll need some straight distance to let it release. Until then, go back into Full Time 4WD.

Works every time. Guaranteed.

I had the same problem and it would always release in the middle of a turn with a big bang. However the full-time trick seems to work for me also.

Another trick to shifting into 4Lo, which is darn near impossible when moving, is to shift into neutral and then shift. Easy as cake, whatever that means...

You're supposed to have the transmission in Neutral when shifting to or from 4LO and only be moving about 2-3 mph.

When I first bought my Jeep they said that it should be able to be shifted from 4PT to 4LO w/o going into neutral, but the salesman said that it is easier to just shift into neutral. Of course cars salesman say a lot of things. Not to disrespect any car salesman in here
