Fuel Mileage

My wife and I are looking at purchasing a CRD in a few months. My step dad is a follower of the Church of Consumer Reports and brought out the issue that had the test drive of the CRD and pointed out the 11 MPG city last night. I explained to him about how they used a measured container with out taking into account the fuel return, but he didn't believe a word of it. I'd like to know what your guys total average mileage is. I am also thinking we should get a 2005 due the extended warranty, when looking and 05 and an 06 with mileage and price being similar. What do you guys think?

I get right at 24-25 mpg. Depending on how I drive. If I follow all of the advice I have gotten on here I get a little over 25 mpg. If I drive like I want and used to then I get about 22 or 23 mpg. ( that would be wide open from start to stop, passing anything I catch.) If you find one that is in good shape for a good price I say buy it do the EHM, and ORM and drive on.

To be accurate "I" don't get 22-23 mpg with the ORM, my wife does, and that is around town, multiple short trips. And she drives like she has concrete golashes. When I dirve it on highway trips at 65mph or lower, I get 27+, but I haven't really done a fair trip this season with the ORM and summer diesel. The ORM should mostly help the city type driving (it did for my wife)

I think the ORM at best added 2 mpg. This means now I'm averaging about 23.5-ish mpg per tank. Edited: It said 1 mpg. Having finally updated my mileage log I find it is higher.

Since the day I bought it driving style seems to matter little. Maybe 1-2 mpg average difference between driving with a lead foot v. driving like a granny. The average still has been going up over time. At 10,000 miles MPG jumped up a bit, even though winter diesel hit the stations at about the same time.

I consistantly get 22-23mpg. My driving is VERY mixed, with an emphasis on stop and go due to the nasty commute up I405 each day to work. I have never gotten below 18mpg, which I got when the road was frozen and I had to drive in 4WD for more than a week(rare in the NW). I have no idea how they managed 11mpg, I don't think thats really even possible.

No modifications to my Jeep either.

We average between 22 and 24, and any time we drive "on highway" we have to drive 10 miles before we get to a speed limit above 55, so it takes me about 10 miles to get to the 5th gear. I have not and probably won't do the ORM. My suggestion would be to get an 06 built in 06 as they appear to have fewer problems as several kinks had to be worked out in the field on the 05 and early 06. pluss for a little extra money you can extend your warranty all the way out to 100,000. So warranty should not be the issue, it should be which one you can find with a relatively short service history.

What type of driving??

In the city, I get about 21. On the highway, I get about 26.

Of course, I'm only on my third take of fuel since buying the CRD, and I haven't measured economy since doing the ORM and EHM mods.

The CRD will be for my wife. Most of her driving is to work and back 30ish miles one way, half of the time she goes down the interstate 70+ and if she is not in a hurry she will take the highway with one small community and one small town with 35 mph but the rest at 55+.

I plan on doing ORM, provent, gasser airbox and changing over to the cat 2 micron filter.

I was a devoted follower of Consumer Reports for 20 years (I've still saved the 86-07 Auto issues)
I'm glad I bought my CRD before I read their report - after I read it .....
I stopped paying attention to what CU said about the CRD

however as a Note for your stepdad - by CU testing standards the Gas v6 gets 15 mpg and the CRD averages 18 (Apr 06 Auto issue pg 57) - so it's 20% better mileage than gas and if you assume a 50/50 in town vs highway they had to have gotten 25mpg on their highway test to average 18 - they never mentioned that.

for the record - in stock condition - I ran 13,000 miles at an overall average of 22.86 (hi 26.25 lo 17.81)
after the Lift, MTR's & ARB bumper I've added another 22,000 miles average of 19.43 (hi 24.85 lo 13.68 (in 4 low @ Moab))

I did not correct for tire size - so you can add ~ 5% post lift

I get about 20-21mpg city or highway (near sea level). With ORM or without. Strangely I have gotten 25-28 up in the mountains.

Most of my driving is city, where I get about 21mpg consistently. On road trips I get 27 - 30 mpg depending on speed.

My daily drive is about 15 miles over rolling hills divided about 1/2 and 1/2 between rural highway (45>60 mph) and city (20>35 MPH). Before the ORM I got about 22 now I get about 24. I say about because sometime I get more or less city driving. Out on the open road for long stretches I have gotten as high as 32. Most CRD's have about a 6% odometer error that throws the EVIC off to a low reading.

Price of gas finly went past RUG here locally today, $2.899 for RUG and $2.85 BP ULSD. :wink:

The wife will start driving the MB probably next week, 30 mpg city is nice.

My overall average after 38k miles is 24.4 mpg. All highway average is 29.4 mpg and all city is 20.2 mpg. Mileage numbers are corrected for odometer that reads 2% low. No aftermarket mods, no F37, no additives, no warm-ups and no regrets.

You should have a better poll than just above or below 25mpg as it does not give you a good view of data points.

A large number of us average below 25mpg but still above 20mpg - so at least double the Consumer Reports lame duck report results.

I just calculated my average MPG and it is 24.3 MPG at 25,000 miles. This is from MPG=total miles/total gallons used.

Just ran through my first full tank with the ORM and I got 25.5 MPG with an even mix of city/highway driving. This is up 3 MPG from my usual average.

No matter what I do or how I drive, I cannot get above 23 MPG. I usually average between 19-22 MPG and I drive 90% on highway/interstate at 65+ MPH. I love my Jeep for the most part, but I'm very disappointed by the fact that I cannot get better MPG no matter what.

BTW, I currently have around 26k miles...
