It's a 27' Ultra Light. It weighs 3900# dry (never weighed it loaded - probably real close to 5k), and I use a Hensley Arrow hitch to stop the tail from wagging the dog.

I've towed this trailer with a 2002 3.7L KJ (9 mpg), and a 2004 Hemi Durango (10 mpg), and the CRD whoops them both with 13 mpg!

Do you mind me asking what model that particular trailer is? I have a CRD as well and have been looking for a trailer like that to buy to pull. Also is the hitch like an equalizer hitch??? Thanks.

I had to post that again b/c thats purely insane! Ive never seen someone tow something that big!

You said that the kj tows better than the Hemi, I guess you mean when comparing MPG? I just cannot see a libby towing better than the hemi since it has 375ftlbs.

Do you ever tow that thing on any hills? I must imagine that it gets slow.

haha, Im just shocked that you tow a trailer that big! Do you have any airbags on the rear of the libby? That would help with the sagging, but then it would take weight off the front wheels since the WD system wouldnt be working right. :?

Actually a CRD will tow better than a HEMI. The reason is the Diesel engine.

The Hemi's torque is higher up in the rev range than the diesel's. So unless, you wanna run the Hemi at Peak torque for hours on end you might want to bring some ear plugs and a bottle of Tylonol. Also, higher RPMS = more gas. So yes you can probably tow more with the Hemi but at what cost.

Diesels are torque engines. Many give more than 90% of their torque in the first 2000 rpm or less. So this is ideal for towing.

The Hemi had more torque (sorry to say that - but it does 385 lb-ft). The Hemi could kick back to second at 65 mph, CRD can only manage 3rd at that speed. The Hemi sucked more fuel. The Durango also weighed 1000# more than a KJ - better for stability / worse for economy.

The trailer is a Forest River Surveyor - 261T. Four bunks in the back and the front folds out with a double bed and canvas roof. I purchased it when I had a 3.7L KJ and it was the biggest thing I found under 5000#. The 3.7L did ok in third gear on the freeway and kicked down to 2nd on hills. The CRD chugs along in 4th and kicks back to 3rd. I have yet to go far out of Michigan with it, so no real challenging grades. If I want to go through the Rockies I'll get a Cummins. (But I'll never sell the half-pint!)

The hitch is a Hensley Arrow. Big $$$, but with the size difference I wasn't taking any chances.

Yes I put Air Lifts in the rear. Mostly because the stock suspension can't handle the torque with any tongue weight on it. Got all wiggly in first & second gear when the turbo kicked in. The picture above was before the AirLifts.

Most of the time I tow with the stock tires (can't wait until they're dead), but I like towing with the D rated MT/R's better, less sidewall flex. If I'm not planning any off-road fun though, I don't need to grind off good tread tugging...

I love the trailer on your pic, pitty we cant get that here in holland :(.
But your CRD is doing a great job with it.
I dont know if its done. there where you live?
but i got mine 2.8 CRD's engine Chip-tuned. :D and the Automatic transmission upgraded.
Now it has : 202hp / 470 Nm, its improved the overall ride, and towing is easy now, even with a big trailor like yours.
And then the milage, i wend from 18 Lts per 100 Km to a 8,2 Lts per 100 Km.
So if it can be done there, Go for it

When the standard software for the engine got upgraded, they also reset transmission gear ratio.
Specialy when towing, this safes on gear changes, gives better fuel economy, and will make you always to be the first to arrive at the top of the hill :D
And when driving single, its speeds up your total car and engine performance.
I do now from 0 to 60 in just 7sec 8) (verry nice at the traffic lights, you will take off like your having a Hemi instead of a diesel :-)r
Sorry if i cant explain it so good to you, but my technical english sucks
Dutch and blond :-)r
