Hey all...

Well I finally decided to try the ORM and drove around town running errands. No huge difference noticed right off the bat. Well on my way to work today I suddenly lost most of my power and I couldn't hear the turbo spooling up anymore. From what I recall from my Audi days, this felt a lot like limp mode. NO torque up the hills and it didn't really want to go above 2000rpm. Has anyone had the 2 of these related before?

I was thinking of disconnecting the battery and undoing the ORM just to compare. Any advice?

check your hoses... it could be that your air charge tube fell off the turbo.. :shock: thats what it felt like when it happend to me

Mine did that - lost power - barely run about 2-3000 - no power

Turned it off -and back on and it was happy again.

It was after a tank of marginal diesel - lot's of sputtering from that

I did plug in the MAF - to see if the CEL went away (I don't have a code reader) and it did clear.

I don't know root cause and it has not repeated.

ATXKJ- So when you restarted it the problem went away? I didn't try that but it's sitting outside with the battery disconnected. Maybe I'll try restarting it with the ORM still done. It takes about 15-20 minutes to clear the codes on these with the battery disconnected right?

Same here, from a fresh tank of Bio (until I got home, let it cool down, and started it up again). I think it had some contaminants that got past the POS factory fuel filter. Time for a Cat Diesel filter, I say 8)

I've been running the ORM for a few just over a week. This is the first full tank on the ORM, and I don't know if I've been ginger footing it or if the ORM makes a real difference, but my gauge is reading about a quarter tank with 360 miles showing on the trip odometer. All my driving has been around town, stop and go. Nothing longer than 20 miles at a time. Very little interstate crusing.

I can't wait to see what this tank yields. The best I've seen since I've owned the CRD was 24mpg when I did a 5 hour interstate jaunt on a tank (pre ORM). I went 480 miles and refueled with 19.6 gallons (my low fuel light never came on either!). I'm hoping this tank of all around town city driving will get close to what I got on the highway trip. That would be nice.

chadhargis, when you hit the accelerator, what is your max RPM? 2k? 2.5k? 1.5k?

I gladly haven't gone into Limp Mode for about 5k miles now. I hope for that to never happen ever again...

Well I have no idea what I did but the problem went away. The ORM is still done and I D/C'd the battery for a bit then restarted it. The CEL is still on but it runs just fine now. Strange.

If I stomp the pedal to the floor, my RPMs will go all the way to redline, then the tranny will change gears.

Well I know that. :)

But what is your usual acceleration like in city traffic? Mine is about 2k-2.5k. If I can pull it off, I'll try something under that. Anything after 2.5k is worthless anyway as you're just blowing diesel soot at the person behind you and not moving any faster. :)

I typically keep the RPMs under 2.5k.

I really wish the tranny would shift up to 5th gear sooner. I hate crawling down the road at 50mph turning 2,000rpm. The peak torque is at 1800, and I'm guessing there is plenty of torque right off idle to sustain a 1500rpm cruise rpm.

Yes -the limp mode went away

I turned it off to inspect all hoses - couldn't find any problems - I was 1/4 mile from a Exxon station - carefully drove over and topped of the tank (and dumped in some more Powerservice) - but it seemed to be fine from the power off/on - the tank topoff was a precaution.
Has continued to run fine for the next ~1500 miles. No clue what the problem was.

I just turned right and accelerated hard and got the dreaded limp-mode. A restart of the car fixed it and it has never happened again.

It is probably coincidental that you got the limp mode and just did the ORM.

I strongly encourage you to enter a NHTSA report on the limp mode. Many of us have had it occur and create a safety situation. Would be nice if they could solve that issue, and maybe enough reports to the NHTSA will get it done.

holy crap! after reading the limp mode thread, this has happend to me!!! almost got ran over as well, i just wrote it off due to the fact that i was running my 2nd ever batch of 100% bio-d.

my story is the same... on my way home from work, im at a red light with 60 other " i need to get home now" cars behind me, light turns green and its a flash back to a Nascar restart...

"green flag green flag!! and there off... wait.. TROUBLE in turn 1! and the yellow flag is back out... wait, its still a green flag.. their all just zooming around him..we need a yellow... what is he doing?? you just cant stop in the middle of a race track.....

but for me it was 5 mph in the middle of one of the most busy intersections in dallas....

I was also amazed at your thread on limp mode because I had written a similar post a couple months earlier http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/vie ... highlight= and at the time nobody knew what I was talking about, in fact a cople people compared the symptoms to early 80's Ford drivability problems ???!! The problem has happened one time since and we also found out that if you shut it off and re-start it goes away. I wonder if it's happened to anyone since they've done the cat fuel filter upgrade? Tigafila

hey all, thought I'd chime in.
I pulled a trailer of transplant soil home saturday, two yards of moist sandy stuff, maybe a total of 5500 pounds? the little diesel really pulled hard and I thought I was the coolest thing going, till after a WOT run from an intersection over a bridge and a stop at another light, maybe a half mile, the thing is just rattling and vibrating badly, neutral revs up quick and smooth, but in gear the thing only idles through the intersection. (Limp mode?) So thru I go, and pull off asafp, pop the hood and push on the fuel prime handle three full slow pumps, till the handle goes firm, (lucky guess) After a quick search for leaks and a short prayer, I hop back in and off I go again, not a problem in the world. might not be a limp mode, but the symptoms that have been described above kinda relate. maybe there is a common thread with lack of prime? I am running OEM fuel filter for now, but will be running the CAT filter soon, and priming the system every weekend.

Hmmmm. Too many of us for it to be a 'coincidence'.

I thought it might be a fuel problem. Barely got through intersections, pulled into station, added fuel (just in case, though I had plenty), primed the pump, and things smoothed out after that.

And here I thought it was something I did?!

Not sign of that since; that was my only experience with it.

I did happen at a start, after it had run (warmed up) and then sat for 2-3 hours. I think it started, died, started and ran like a dog... rough, barely.. till I got to the station. Next time, if there is one, I won't wait to stop and prime.

Now I wonder if the fuel hadn't boiled and got some air in there...

I doubt that it was limp home - since there's no code and it is soooo not functional I doubt you could pull away from a curb if there were any slope at all.

My vote, so far, is for fuel'us interruptus; aka air.

I have also had the crd lose power merging onto a highway. Couldn't get the rpm's above 2k, limped along at 45 mph. Pulled over, shut it down, turned it on, and voila, like windows xp, everything was fine.
Then, just this week, I walk out to go to work in the morning, turn the key, and it starts but sounds like it is running on 3 cylinders. I rev'd it up a bit to see if that would clear it, when the rpm's dropped back to idle, it was still rough. I shut it off, started it up, and the same symptoms. This time, I rev'd it up to 3k, held it there for 10 seconds, then idled it back down. It ran just fine after that. What gives?

'06 with 15k miles, and 1/2 tank of fuel.
