Yeah, what he said. The shop should have just pryed on the shock mounting opening to get them to fit. That is what I had to do to mine as the Ranchos were not installed w/ washers and they had crushed a little too. (though the Ranchos do fit better than the Rustys)

Can you make it work for a stock Liberty? I don't want buy a lift, but I do want the extra travel that the shocks provide.

The answer is negative.
The longer OME shocks are 2.5" longer than stock, but have the same working stroke. So you need to install 2.5" bumpstops to prevent damaging the shocks at full compression of the suspension. If you have not lifted the vehicle, you would have only very little room left for spring compression, and too much suspension downtravel. The spring will be fully extended long before you reach full extension of your shock.

The reason for the bushings on the OME's looking to wide is the Rusty's shocks do not have the right bushings(not wide enough) and when you tighten the top bolt is crushes the mount. So the OME's only looked to wide but are actually not, they are specifically made for the KJ.

The mechanic didn't compare the two shocks before installation. He started to put them on and was unable to get them to fit. He spent a considerable amount of time getting them on the KJ.

What you have happening is that the old shocks pulled your shock mounts together, so when you got the proper sized bushing in there, it appeared to be too small. You may have issues in the future because you ground down the bushing.. if you see this happening, be sure to spread the mount to it's original size, NOT grind the bushing.

You need higher bump stops as soon as you install longer shocks. The original rear bump stops remain in place, they are mounted on the upper spring seat. But you fix another bump stop of adequate height on the lower spring seat (inside of the spring coil). This additional bump stop may be made of rigid material (because the original upper bump stop absorbs the blow) and it should be wide enough to make sure the upper bump stop will hit it properly.
