I have also had the crd lose power merging onto a highway. Couldn't get the rpm's above 2k, limped along at 45 mph. Pulled over, shut it down, turned it on, and voila, like windows xp, everything was fine.
Then, just this week, I walk out to go to work in the morning, turn the key, and it starts but sounds like it is running on 3 cylinders. I rev'd it up a bit to see if that would clear it, when the rpm's dropped back to idle, it was still rough. I shut it off, started it up, and the same symptoms. This time, I rev'd it up to 3k, held it there for 10 seconds, then idled it back down. It ran just fine after that. What gives?

'06 with 15k miles, and 1/2 tank of fuel.

Cold blooded. Had a sniffle and needed it's nose blown.

Well, the engine is Italian...sounds like it needed an "Italian tune up". That consists of running it wide open for a long period of time at high RPM.

- on the 'running wide open'
- I10 through West Texas is now 80 mph - rev's about 2400 - engine loves it - mileage doesn't
but if you have 500 miles of Texas in front of you - it's worth it.

Let er rip, WFO, get er done... when this happens there is no warning and the vehicle barely moves!!! It has nothing to do with needing its nose blown or cleaned out. It is interesting that a couple of folks have pumped the primer and it has gone back to normal, I've never tried that, but while moving I can slap it in neutral, turn it off, start it,put it in gear and accelerate like nothing happened. As far as I know there is no lift pump that cycles with the key that would push or pull the air through when re-started like I described I just don't know what fixes it when turned off then on. My guess is that you have air in the fuel system. The computer may be picking up on this if it is seeing low or erratic fuel rail pressure as a result. It could either be a limp home mode type of thing or it may not know what to do with the numbers it is seeing. Cycling the engine off may be reseting the computer. This is admittedly speculation on my part, but I would start by bleeding the air out of the fuel filter. Start with the simple things and if you're lucky you never have to go past them.

Well I can attest that mine was definitely some kind of a limp mode. I finished my 40 mile commute and was able to keep up highway speeds but it would not go above 2000rpm and I wasn't getting any boost. It basically felt like I was driving a naturally aspirated CRD. My mileage was still good though haha. But it was fixed the next tiem I statred it up....strange.

I remember in winter when it as -35c here for a few days I was on a road trip and all of a sudden cruise dropped, I give it gas and she would barely accelerate. Pulled over, put it in park, revved her up and watched the tach go up ever so slowly, first thought, no turbo. Just for fun I pulled back out on to the empty highway and floored it, lol, slooooooooow. Pulled back over, turned it off and back on and I was back in business, never a problem since. I chocked it up to being -35c but maybe this was limp mode? Oh yah, no ORM back then.

I think all would agree this is fuel related. I'm not sure if I agree just yet that air is "leaking" in or coming from the fuel itself (foam, etc.)
Some common characteristics:
When "limp" mode occurs, nothing appears to clear it until ignition off.
When stumbling idle occurs, increased throttle appears to clear out the air- possibly because the computer didn't quite trip over to limp mode.

I have had many diesels, my last being an 04 VW Passat TDI. With that car, at 23k miles, it would buck and stumble under increased throttle at speed - all due to a dirty fuel filter. After changing the filter, problem solved. With the high pressure injection system common to the jeep and passat, they are particularly sensitive to fuel issues, as everyone else here has noted.

Will comment further after replacing my fuel filter and analyzing housing for possible leaks.

Charlie
