I've had this vehicle a year and never tried this before. I was playing around this morning and tried shifting from 4 FULL TIME to 4LO. It would not budge past 4 FULL TIME into neutral. I was going at a slow walking pace as indicated in the manual. Is there a trick to this that I'm missing?

Are you pushing the leaver to the Right, then pulling back into Neutral?
Sometimes you have to fight with it a little...

Your transmission has to be in neutral while you are creeping. You have to pull the handle real hard too, no sissy stuff here. You are trying to make the gears mesh without any sort of synchro, hence the slight crawl in neutral and the man handling. Sometimes you won't get it on the first tug, just tug it again a time or two more, it will go in.

I don't think you can go directly from 4hi to 4 lo...I believe you have to be in 2, shift to neutral while rolling, and then pull all the way back fairly hard to get it in to 4lo. I have found that pushing down on the transfer case lever before pulling up helps.

I go from 4-Part-time to 4LO all the time, no problem.

Try while coasting at 2-3mph,place transmission in neutral and then pull t-case lever back and to the right in one swift yank to engage 4-lo,place tranny back into gear and go.

The transmission has to be in neutral, NOT the transfer case! NEVER put your transfer case into neutral with the engine running, you can mess up your transmission or your torque converter.

When you are shifting into 4LO never pause in the neutral position on the transfer case lever.

Whether you start out in 2HI or 4HI, it doesn't matter, the procedure is the same for shifting into 4LO:
Slow to under 5mph, put the transmission into neutral, swiftly tug the transfer case lever up into the 4LO position without pausing in the neutral position, shift the transmission back into gear and go.

I've not had any issues going to 4LO, but it is a little notchy sometimes.

The CRD will idle up pretty steep hills in lo. The first time I used 4lo, I had to mash the brake to keep it from moving forward. So much dang torque even at idle.

You go through neutral every time you put in in 4lo, just dont put the transmission into gear (D or R) with the engine running and the transfer case in neutral.

If you do this on accident, I would recommend stopping, shut engine of while in whatever gear you ar in, shift tranny to neutral, then try putting transfer case in whatever it will go into easiest , then start over.

Ha, first prize goes to Phadeout. Pushing to the right makes all the difference. I re-read the section in the manual and couldn't find anything about this though. I wonder if it's design intent or just the way things are?

If you look at the diagram posted on the shifter itself, it shows the necessary move to the right.

LOL, yup.

Im finding this thread kinda funny, no offense to anyone but I never thought this much would attention would be payed to the topic of swtiching to 4lo.

I just can't believe people

1. Can't read diagrams
2. Think this requires at least a bachelor's degree.
