I posted this at the tail-end of the CAT diesel mod thread, but it sorta justifies itself. If one were give the CRD a fuel pre-filter inline with a water separator (like near the frame, etc) that got the water and all the 10+ micron junk, what are the ramifications?

- Would the fuel system operate okay since it's vacuum-based?
- Would having a WIF sensor adaptor on that filter work (i.e. do the different WIF sensors operate on the same priciples)
- Would it be worth having a secondary fuel heater on that unit (like for cold-weather and startup conditions)

Here's the example that got me thinking:

I was thinking something like this would be better for a direct replacement, with a 2 micron filter of course.

Agreed (except I already bought a CAT converter). Any idea how much the replacement media is for the racor units?

One thing of note is that the even though the factory filter head (and it's plastic hockey puck for sensors) stinks, it's necessary for the fuel temp sensor which the ECM uses for adjustments to fuel quantity and injection timing.SO, we'd have to account for that in a 1-to-1 swap, which was why I thought a small accessory filter might make more sense.

The low pressure pump runs at a variable speed and according to the manual, can reach 73psi inbound to the high-pressure pump. I don't know if the draw rate is that much in the fuel lines, but the RACOR units seem to have a max of 30 PSI. I suppose I could take a pressure reading at the bleeder while the engine is running to find out. I'd really like to know what the operational flow rate is at WOT since that's a limiting factor too.

Make sure you get one for the vacuum side of the pump. There are two styles. Also check e-bay. Lots of those on there for cheaper. You do not need the heater. Check around, there are some very small units avaliable. All you really need is a water screen anyway without a filter. No psi drop with that.
