Here are a couple shots of our PROTOTYPE rooftop tent on my KJ. The PRODUCTION run tent is slightly different. You can see a shot of the production one here on the FJ:
Image
The biggest difference is the color and the extra Annex extension that comes standard on the ARB Touring Tent, keeping the one side permantly covered.
The folks at All J Products make a great bracket kit for the tent and as you can see, it held my 240 lb Arse without breaking a sweat.
Tents will be available in Early Summer, we've got them on the water now for an Early June ETA... contact an ARB dealer for pricing!

That's awesome. Does it attach to the factory roof rack or do you have to have a beefed up one?

You can't use the factory KJ rails, they'd attach but they aren't rated to carry enough weight once you put two people in the tent. You'll need to use a flat mount aftermarket rail system like I have or a beefed up rack from another MFR... but be sure it's rated to carry enough weight of the tent plus the two people you're putting in it... the mounting system can go in either the horizontal or vertical configurations.

Now that has my attention. I just spent the slush fund, but I did have one question Seth, what are the dimensions of the tent and how much weight can the roof of a kj support with those rails?

I assume that there is a matress included that stays in even when folded?

I really like the color of the ARB rooftop tent. What is the total weight of the tent packed?

Ok that is exactly what I am doing this winter when I get the money...I've been wanting a roof top tent for sometime now, I was hoping to get one in time for my trip to Moab in July but I don't think the funds will allow it. What sort of flat rail/base support system are you using Seth? I'm looking at welding one up for me and maybe just hard mounting it to the roof by taking the factory rails off and getting something similar to a Land Rover setup done on the mounting. Have it come down along the sides somewhat and then have a ladder in the back....but we'll see what time will allow...

I hope that made sense???

I love the tent setup on the FJ. You have a little patio to store things, take off the dirty boots and stay dry while doing it, before entering the tent.

That looks awesome. The questions I have is I'm sure it is removeable but how much of a pain in the butt is it to get up and down( on the rack) for your trips, and when I go camping I put all my gear in my Confer rack up top i.e. sleeping bags, stove and the beer. With that system you'll have to pack the cargo area inside( that will barly hold my beer, ha,ha). Not to dog that set-up, I think it's sweet and would like to know how much. For trips without the family.

Couple of Quick answers:
The Tent is held on by a sliding track system with a grand total of 8 bolts holding it in place to an All J products flat mount rail system. Steve had one designed to fit heavier load roof racks, so we just used it and it worked like a charm.
Price (sit down, but remember "Price is soon forgotten, Quality lasts forever") Jobber on the tent is set as of today at $1285 per without a mounting system. That includes the over hangng annex you see on the FJ... lots of extras available including a zip on annex to hang below the opening compeletly, a side awning for the other side of the truck and a mosquito net to surround the awning. We don't mess around here at ARB ;)
Getting it on and off is about as hard as a TJ hard top... two guys (we used a forklift for mine... Ole girl is a little tall these days) can have it on in less than an hour once you have rails that can handle the load installed. All told, with pulling the old rails off, installing the new heavy duty ones and fitting the tent with the fork truck, I had it done with a buddy in under an hour.

I have exact weights and measurements at the shop and will post them tomorrow am. You'll also notice that he FJ has a split side half rack with our logo on it... we'll be selling these and that will allow for some use of the roof for cargo in addition to massive kick stupid tent storage...the All J Rails can be used to fit it, and once I have some time, I'll fit one on and post a shot or three...lets face it, the KJ is small... so space is at a premium.

Yes, the mattress stays inside, everything is sealed under the protective cover. It's about 3" thick and pretty comfy. To set it up, you take off the cover and unfold it... and you're done. Your wife can do it. And she'll love the mattress.

Bottom line, it's spendy... but well worth it if you spend as much time out on the trails as I do. With the price, it's obviously not for everyone.
A little bird tells me to keep and eye on 4WD and SUV for more details and interior shots and some pretty cool shots of a KJ to boot... maybe in July. If you're interested....hmmm...

Aloha!
