Out of those people who have changed their transmission fluid:
-At what mileage did you change it?
-What condition was the fluid in when you changed it?
-Were there any metal shavings present?
-Did you notice any differences after changing it?

Well, I haven't changed mine yet. I'll be changing mine roughtly around 34,000-35,000 miles. I'll let you know if I notice any change.

I changed the fluid in my 03 when it had about 15,000 miles on it. I used Amsoil full synthetic ATF and around that time I also installed a trans cooler. I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary when I changed it but I did the job because I knew I would be towing a heavy pop-up trailer to Moab, Grand Canyon and back to Cali and knew I would be wheeling the crap out of my KJ also. The fluid currently has 25,000 miles on it and looks and smells like new Amsoil atf. I doubt I will change it again until it has about 75,000 miles total on it and I would bet it really won't need to be changed but wth.

Oh yeah, looking forward to it :wink: Not looking forward to loading 5 tires in the jeep at 6am lol but otherwise looking forward to it. I'm sure I'll notice a change after sunday, but doubt it's gonna have anything to do with the tranny fluid :)

Have my trans flushed every 15,000 miles,changed the filters at 30,000 miles with the flush.Going to change the filters again when I flush the tranny for the 4th time at 60,000 miles.

Just curious. There are so many variables depending on who drives, and how they drive, and where they drive that the service schedule in the manual has to be way different depending on the circumstances.
I found what Lil Red Libby said very interesting.

Drop the pan letting all the fluid that Will drain out drain out (about 5-6 Qts) replace filter w/ a new one, reinstall the pan (w/ gasket or rtv) and refill w/ fluid. You don't get all the old fluid out this way but it is better than nothing and unsures that you have a fresh filter installed.

-What condition was the fluid in when you changed it? looked/smelled good, a tad dark
-Were there any metal shavings present? no shavings, an expected amount of metal dust on magnet.
-Did you notice any differences after changing it? just pan drop and filter change with amsoil added. felt like a new transmission. done concurrently with diff and Transfercase fluid swaps.
only driven it a few thou since, just our foul weather and fun vehicle, since it only gets 19.7 and my fullsize lux v8 gets 23-27

-What condition was the fluid in when you changed it? Faint red / no burnt smell / slightly low level wise
-Were there any metal shavings present? didn't look at the magnet - probably some on the magnet
-Did you notice any differences after changing it? Yes, smoother shifting and a good feeling about doing preventative maintence

Changed mine at $51,000, bought the Jeep used and wasnt sure it was done or not.

I noticed it was a darker brownish color before I had it changed/flushed, so I figured it was time.

After reading/posting here, kind of sorry I had it done. Didnt go to the dealer, got it done at a quick lube place. Now I'm paranoid that all they did was flush and refill, didnt use the ATF-4 (or whatever it is) and didnt check the filter. :roll:

Better have it done again at a reputable shop that you trust (to put in ATF+4) or take it to the dealer for all the fun that goes along with it.

fram makes a complete kit, both filters and pan gasket, kragen carries them.

I can get you the Carquest P/N when I get home. It has a pan gasket/filter.

Watch out if you have the 42RLE. There is some confusion still in the aplication guids. The systems for both NAPA and Carquest still show a 45RFE trans in the newer KJ's. We had to look through an actual application book to find the correct, 42RLE trans filter.

Yeah, I've been searching for a little while online... I'm looking at a Hastings kit for 48 bucks.

That being said, if a filter replacement isn't necessary, I may just drop the pan and change the fluid only.
