as opposed to wiring them to your driving lights just connect the wires that would have gone to the driving lights and ground to some other source of switched power and ground

Rip,
Here's what I did.

On 500 lamp itself- blue wire is ground to the bracket bolt, black wires run to the relay.

On the relay mounted under hood- blue wire is ground to a fender bolt,
red is run to a bolt on the fuse box by the battery, yellow is ran into the cab via a firewall grommet to the switch, and black runs to the 500s.

On the switch-yellow to the relay, blue is ground on a bolt (on steering column, if i remember) and green, which is "supposed" to run to the headlights, i tapped into the cigerette lighter.

Hope that helps, I know the 500 wiring directions leave a bit to be desired. I searched a bunch for the way to do it. rather how I wanted it. good luck.

mike

i took the lamp itself apart and made the blue wire connections, and then connected those the the blue wire that goes into the relay. i have the yellow going to the cab for the switch, the red to the battery, and the black is to the relay too. is this wrong?

The blue wires should all go to ground - the two from the lights to a bolt or bolts somewhere near the front (I used one of the bolts for the front radiator cross-member), the one from the relay to any convenient bolt near the relay, and the one for the switch to a bolt under the instrument panel (I used one near the steering column). How did you connect the green wire to power, did you go to the hi-beams, the marker lamps or another switched source?

If you're using a switch to control the lights then a relay isn't necessary, you would only need to use one if you wanted to have them come on with the high-beams.

So you are saying that if I just want to be able to switch the 500s on at any time, I should just wire the lights to the battery and then to the switch, no relay? Is that safe?
