Air Box

This came up in the other Liberty forum but didn’t really understand their answers maybe it’s just me. :oops:

There is a small “sponge” in the air filter box. I don’t have it but as far as I know 04+ do have it. This might be an easy one but what is it for? Would it help if I added one to my Liberty? What would it help?

This is my air box like my signature says it’s an 02. No "sponge".

This is an air box from an 04 and it does have it. Hey look at that is has a "sponge".

I have wondered about that myself. I had an 02, no sponge. Now I have an 05 and got the sponge :?:

It could be there to absorb ambient moisture in the airbox before it has a chance to absorb into the air filter. That's just my guess since I'm not a Jeep engineer.

It keeps oil from getting in the intake. That is a CCV tube. If you have some miles on your Jeep, it should have oil in it which is normal.

Idk why the 02's do not have it.

Do you mean PCV tube? That is on the side of the oil fill stalk, isn't it? If not what is the CCV tube and what is it's function?

Hey that second picture is my airbox and the famous sponge bob sittin in there just hanging and chillin...

Yes that is your pic from JeepKJ site good eye :shock:

darn dirty filthy air box clean it out!

Back on track do you think it would make a difference if I swapped it out?
