My owners manual never came in the Jeep. I recently bought a 2 ton floor jack with two 2 ton stands as well as that rolling bed for underneath but i dont know where to put the jack or the stands to get it up in the air high enough to change my own oil. any where to put them would be great aslo what oil filter i need, where its at, how much oil, best oil to use and where the nut is to drain it ohh one last thing is how big the nut is so i know what size i need? this is my first oil change by my self. Im generally clueless. pictures anything will help. Thanks!

Good spot for the jack stands. Look for the notch in the frame rail on both sides of the Jeep.


Looking from underneath the front bumper on the drivers side, you will see the filter. It might be other colors, but I think the factory filter is black.


Drain plug on the oil pan. It is 13mm and you can use a socket or wrench.

The cross member is a good place to lift the vehicle from w/ your floor jack. The above pic shows it fom the back side. NOTE: These pics taken w/ no skids in place. You might have a front suspension skid.

Best place for oil, filters, etc..... 5 qts. 5W-30 and a EAO34 (Amsoil filter) or Wix 51516

Did you look really...really hard for that manual? It sits in a little hole up in the very top of the jocky box that you can't see.

Instead of jacking it up, I use ramps to change my oil. It makes it much easier - you just drive right up 'em. If you don't want to spend the money or go through the hassle of ordering Amsoil, you'll get very positive results from Mobil 1 Synthetic. Personnaly I use the the extended drain synthetic, and mine is still running strong, purring like a kitten after almost 68,000 miles. Use 5 quarts of oil. I find it is easiest to get to the filter from the top of the engine. I use a step ladder to reach down to get the leverage neded to unscrew the filterer. REMEMBER: Always check your old filter to make sure the gasket is still there and swab a little of the old oil on the new gasket to help it seal. Only screw it on hand-tight and then give it a little bit more to make sure it doesn't loosen up. Hope this helps.

Takes me minutes from the comfort of my home to place an order and it shows up on my doorstep in a few days. I can also order for people and it makes it even easier. BTW, Amsoil is competitively priced against Mobil 1 Extended and still beats it in testing and real world use.

The ramp thing works too, but I hate the pair of ramps I have as they don't like to stay still on my concrete driveway when I'm trying to drive up them. I actually don't use ramps or stands or a jack to change my oil any more as there is plenty of room under my Jeeps to do it w/out them.

I live just north of Cinci and there's a warehouse for Amsoil in Columbus. So if Freshmud wants to order online, it ships in maybe two days. This saved me the hassle of running into town for oil and filter at the parts store (which carries pretty much Fram and store brand only filters).

Anyway, I'm very pleased with the amsoil process.

Take your time at it. Not something you want to screw up. Just take it one step at a time and you'll get more comfortable and faster the more you do it.

I'm very pleased with their process as well. UPS put a hole in one of the quarts of oil I purchased (thankfully I purchased an extra). I called Amsoil's office in Wisconsin and notified them, they sent me out another quart of oil without even asking a question. Plus their phone system does not have any automated call routing. You dial and speak to an opperator. I was able to transfer the remaining contents of my punctured bottle of oil, so in the end I got a free 3/4 quart of oil.

In the future, I'm probably going to have all my oil shipped to JJ's house and do it all there. Street parking sucks, and UPS requires me to be present to pick up any deliveries.

Good luck with the oil change, especially the filter. If you have the skid plates, not shown in JJ's picture, you can still jack it up at the crossmember. That's where the tranny and engine skid bolt into. You also won't need to remove the skid plates since there are holes for the oil to drain through.

well it took me awhile and i could not get that darn filter off so i bought i filter puller which didnt help cause of where that belt is but i got it and im pretty stoked so im re doing my whole garage so i can work on my jeep down there all the time

all else fails, and saving you a trip to the store, do the old method of stabbing the filter with a screwdriver on the side and use that for a handle.

oil filter should only be hand tight (or just passed it anyway) right??? I have one more free oil change and I will start doing it myself. I wonder what the dealership would do if I asked them to make sure it's just hand tight so it will be easier for me later on...

and a lot of little stuff...

The best thing they can do to make sure it is easily removable in the future is to lube up the gasket w/ some clean oil before installing the filter. IF they don't, and I don't think they do from the factory, it will cook itself onto the filter mounting surface and be a real PITA to remove.
