Holy jeebus.

So this is only a problem for the '05 to '06 models?

i'm going through the same issue w/ my 05 Libby Renegade.
I had my truck in on Jan 18th for misfire/engine light,
told me it was a "old code" they cleared it and said don't worry about it.

Now on May 9th, light on again, same problem. Misfire Cylinder 5,
they make me pay 120.00 saying it's a maintence item.

May 19th. I complained to the manager, They cleaned my engine out "stating it was carbon buildup" and they did the service for free, well i actually already paid, but anyways..
They filled my tires w/ nitrogen as a courtesy...

Now the light is on again.. same misfire code..
I'm about to claim lemon law on it.. they keep side stepping the issue.

Now i'm to the point where they are going to tear down my engine, and find out what's wrong..

Lemon law states 3 or more times for same issue can bring on the lemon law..

What should I do?

My 05 has 22k on it..

This is somewhat of a common problem on these liberties. Luckily not mine yet. I work for a fleet management company where i monitor, decline or authroize repairs. Basically just make sure our clients aren't getting ripped by the dealer or repair shop. Anyway i've seen a few of 3.7's go in for a misfire and then end up having to replace the intake valves due to carbon buildup. What happens is carbon builds up around the valves resulting in them not seating properly, causing a loss of compression, which the end result is a misfire. I"m sure chrysler has some type of tsb out on this. All the ones i've dealt with were either under the 3/36 warranty or the 7/70 with the deductable.

Just be glad it's not a junk ford with a 4.6 or 5.4 motor that blows the spark plugs and the threads right out of the heads.
I had over a 100,000 on my trouble free 4.6. At least they have a 5 year powertrain warranty.
over 160k on my trouble free 4.6. if you are blowing sparkplugs its because they were installed wrong, you/they probably put anti sieze or didnt torque them right, or you didnt clean the holes out good prior to taking them out. have changed plugs tons of times, never any problem whatsoever.

im wondering what the restriction is that keeps the valves from seating? the only possible thing could be sticking valves. the seats themselves should wear off anything on the seat with every other stroke. thats more of varnish problem on your valve guides more than carbon being the problem. if you fix the sticky valves the carbon would probably just burn itself off

I have 21k on my 05 Limited. I got it back from the dealer a couple of weeks ago. They did a valve job and said there was more damage than they expected. I notice a little more power when accelerating and my gas mileage is a little worse. Some notes from my work order...

Found codes PO 301, 302, 303, 304 (cylinder misfires).
Found TSB 09-007-06 - Replace valves and keepers.
Removed cylinder heads and found intake valves to be failing, replaced intake valves and keep ers and lapped valves.

There's a link to the TSB over at jeepkj.com....

http://www.jeepkj.com/forums/viewtopic. ... a3b9e7b234

Everything was covered under warranty, didn't cost me a dime. I'm still under the 3/36 warranty, but this is also be covered under the 7/70 warranty (for 05 owners).

Ha! Chevron will take care of everything (so long as you don't have an 05 or 06).

198,000 on my 5.4 no problems!!
Almost ready for the second plug change.
However I know the Lightnings were spitting plugs.
I can only hope for such luck with the KJ.

Old thread but need to ask. I have 05 Liberty with 215,xxx miles on it. Just got the cylinder #4 misfire. It goes away once it gets hot. Since so many have been done is this covered under a recall? Or if it is my valves will I have to pay to have them done?

before moving on to mechanical issues , valves / gasket check these

spark plugs, coil packs, fuel injectors

put new plugs in it if it hasnt been done in awhile, new coils if they haven't been done in awhile, run some fuel injector cleaner see if it "magically goes away"

if it doesn't after at least plugs, move #4 coil pack to a different cyl see if the misfire moves, if it does replace the coil pack, if it doesn't replace #4's fuel injector etc

Im assuming since they mentioned valves that they replaced the coil, plug, cleaned the injectors and flashed the PCM.

I would move the coil for #4 to a different cylinder, and move the spark plug to a different cylinder, then see where the misfire is upon startup, cold that is. If the miss follows the coil, then you have a coil problem, if it follows the plug, then you know replace the plugs. Now if it goes away completely, suspect a connector issue at the coil. If it still has a miss at #4, then you need to investigate whether its an injector issue, or a mechanical one. To figure out if you have an intake valve sticking, hook up a vacuum gauge to the vacuum line to the brake booster. Start it up cold when the miss occurs. If your intake valves arent sticking, the needle will be steady, the exact amount of vacuum varies depending on several factors. If you have an intake sticking, you will see a definite flutter in the needle. It wont flutter due to a miss, it will flutter because of an intake valve not sealing, or not sealing, or otherwise not functioning.

i typically don't assume thats the case, most usually fear the worst long before the worst is the issue

usually people mention that if that's the case too

Yeah I agree 100%. Assuming makes an A S S out of U and ME. I was just throwing it out there(semi sarcastically) as like you stated people go hog wild before looking at the obvious... Many times I have seen techs skip the diag process and go straight to what their mind tells them to look. "Oh my engine is running rough, Ill replace the cylinders..." is too common.

i'm guilty of it

but i do at least weigh the effort vs cost vs probability that it'll need to be replaced in .. the next 30k anyway?

I tend to replace things before they fail or start showing problems though

it's bit me once or twice, like bought a car used, it was missing a pad shim, developed a popping noise, bought hubs after doing a once over, did a brake job around the same time, noticed the pads were missin the slider shims

bout 3k later had a hub fail .. the new one :P
