Apparently a certified tranny shop with a good rep can still get the new pump. Yesterday Bruce said he had a new pump on the way, and that he actually had an easier time getting it this go round than he did for Ranger1 and crdmike.

Either Bruce has a good rep now with Chrysler, after his conversation with one of their higher ups, or perhaps Chrysler is tumbling to the fact that by letting people go this route this can make most of their tranny problems disappear, without having to spring for warranty work and making some money selling the new pumps.

Word is the new pump is the same design that's going in the 68RE six speed tranny behind the 6.7 L Cummins diesels. If it's stout enough to hold up behind a Cummins..... :D

For that matter, it looks as though the 68RE is nothing more than an upgraded 545RFE. Perhaps this is what Mopar64 was alluding to when he said that the 545 was going to get a serious upgrade for '08. Word also is that the beefier 68RE parts can be easily transplanted into a 545, not just the pump. Who knows, if it's using the same case, you might be able to go as far as a complete swapout and drop a 68RE into our CRD's.

A Suncoast TC, a 68RE six speed tranny, and an Inmotion/Rocketchip tune. Pardon me while I wipe the drool off the keyboard.

When it looked as if the new pump might not be available, I e-mailed Ron at Suncoast. I asked him specifically if the original pump would be up to the task with their TC and a Transgo shift kit installed. The short version of his answer was yes, unless you had reason to believe that the pump had been damaged in some way (ie, debris from a TC failure going thru it), the original pump would work fine. Matter of fact, he noted that they had used the original pump on their test mule CRD for all their development and testing, and that's how it was returned to the owner, with the original pump.

So, it would seem that the minimum preferred mod in this case would be the Suncoast TC and a Transgo shift kit, with the new pump being a matter of owner preference and budget.

Mine will be having it done in 2 weeks time, along with the new pump. If the July 10th layoff goes thru, there is a possibility I will be spending the summer out in southwestern Wyoming, on a temporary summer crew for a company that contracts to BP Oil. If that's the case, I want that tranny to be bulletproof. Nearest decent repair facility would be 2 1/2 hours away in Salt Lake, and that would be one heck of a tow bill.

LocoCRD,

I had the tranny place on Northern Blvd do the transgo kit in our CRD. They were very fair on pricing, and I had them replace all the fluid with new synthetic and double check the work the dealer did. By that I mean verify that the torque converter and pump had been replace.

Been thinking about getting a price from them for the suncoast converter swap.

Greg, also in Rio Rancho

Thanks Greg, I'll check them out. Is that your dark kacki lifted CRD I see running around with rubis? If so it's a beauty.

Hey Mitch,

Bruce really likes the 545RFE when they pulled mine apart they said it's virtually bulletproof once it's set up right. I really tried avoiding the pump but they were insistent on replacing it. Once I saw what the difference was I can understand why and for nearly $300.00 it isn't that expensive for the piece of mind. I can understand though if they become hard to get it's no reason to not do the SunCoast.

BTW, this thing motors along better and better with every additional mile as Ranger1's said his did. You're going to have a nice set up in a few weeks.

Remember to have him change your front diff fluid, I brought mine with me, at the same time. I put the Amsoil in all the way around.

From what I've read, about $1100 plus installation.

about $1800 to be exact; endurance, SunCoast would be a nice road trip for you and you'd get a pro job from the source.

Awesome, $1800 is not too bad. Would they have all the parts there, TC pump and shiftkit? Its only 5 hours away too. How many days do they need it?

Ft. Walton is only about 8 hours from me. Might be a nice trip down if they do installs there. :)

I think the part numbers and sources for the parts should be put in the FAQ.

I'm still under warranty, but I'm getting a chip tune that I'm sure will grenade the TC, so I'm going to install the Suncoast when the time comes and update the pump. Would be nice to have a single post with all the info in it without having to schlog through all the pages in this post.

All, $1800 is the approximate price that a local tranny shop in Mooresville N.C. did the SunCoast TC, pump and TransGo shiftkit upgrade, rather than a complete transmission rebuild. No idea of what SunCoast would charge for the same spec work.

SunCoast does have a complete transmission rebuild, complete with SunCoast TC, heavy duty clutches and Transgo shift kit, for over double that amount. They offer either a rebuild or tranny swapout for slightly over $4K on the 545RFE built to their specifications.

I went with the TC/pump and TransGo shift kit upgrade after sending a sample of transmission oil in to Blackstone labs and finding normal wear metals, but maximum insolubles reading.

Ranger1 is right, I am not sure what others charge out there but that was my approx cost.

Check it out with Ron; I'm only telling you what Bruce charged. Your going to want to have him order the pump from DC and they sell everything else. I originally was planning on them to do the job before Mitchell's contact.

As a side note, over on the TDR forum, they were discussing the MANUAL SHIFT feature on the 68RE. From what I gathered, whatever gear you select, that's the top gear the tranny will be limited to, and it will still shift as an automatic thru that gear and all the gears below it.

I know someone on this forum already has a 6.7L Cummins with this tranny. If you've got your ears on, any other info you can give us on this?

Ron at SunCoast told me roughly $700 for the labor of this mod, I'm expecting about the same from my local shop, getting it done next monday. I ordered the Pump kit for about $300 on friday, I had the parts dept at the dealership pull it up by the kit number from alldatadiy.com (part # CECAF371). Will be in Monday, it had to get shipped from Greenbay, I'm in Milwaukee. From the description of the drivetrain after this mod I can't wait. Also reliability is the main goal. Off to CO, WY, and MT in 21 days. Also doing the shift kit, Thanks for the hard work on getting this together, you guys rock :D
