I'm currently running 245/75-16 MT/Rs. The standard Rubicon wheel/tire upgrade. Everyone knows that it kills power, thus I upgraded to 4.10 gears.

My question here is about mileage though. If I wanted to recover some of my fuel efficiency, would going from the MTRs to a more street friendly tire that is still 245/75 recover some mpg?

Or would I have to go back to the stock tire size to see any gains?

In a Jeep magazine I picked up the other day, they did just that. They swapped their beefy mud treads for an All Terrain tire and picked up 1.5 MPG.

Keep in mind that while many A/T tires weigh less thand a mud tread there can still be a big weight difference among the A/T's. Pick a couple tires on Tire Rack and compare the weight. I was surprised that BFG A/T's were so heavy when compared to some of the other choices.
