My Check Engine Light came on after Jiffy Lube put too thick of an oil in my CRD, now the Check Engine Light won't go out. The codes indicate a bad EGR valve, after replacing it ALL (not covered under the extended warranty I bought BTW) the light is still on and the codes still say bad EGR. The dealer is stumped.

Has anybody else had a similar problem? If, can you share how it was finally fixed?

As long as it's stuck closed, that's a good thing. EGRs are evil, evil, evil things that gunk up your intake.

When you say "replaced it all" does that mean both the AFC and the EGR valves? Did you have the Chrysler MaxCare extended warranty? And finally, what were the codes exactly?

It's difficult to help without knowing the exact obd codes that are still present.

I'm not sure about the terms of te extended warranty, but have you investigated the emissions warranty? Could EGR be covered like a catylitic converter for 150,000 miles?

It might be worth calling DCX customer service to ask.

Thanks for all the responses! I love my CRD and am really bummed as this is the only problem I have ever had in 45K miles.

I bought my CRD from CarMax so that's where the extended warranty came from (my local Jeep dealer said they honor the CarMax warranty so at the time I thought it was a good deal).

I would have thought the EGR would be covered under the emissions waranty as well, but the dealer told me otherwise.

I will get the exact code and let you all know!

BTW when I said "replaced it all" the dealer replaced $1,039 worth of EGR valve and assembly (yes, one-thoushand, thirty-nine dollars!!).

At the very least, warranty coverage or not, you could reasonably argue with the dealer that the repair isn't completed if it still has the same obd codes and can't pass state vehicle inspection. I don't know of many inspection stations that will pass a vehicle if the CEL light is on.

P0299 is turbocharger underboost. It seems unusual that you don't have a P0401, EGR low flow code as well. If you only have a P0299, check to see that they put the CAC hose clamps back on correctly. It may be leaking boost out of a loose turbo hose. Are you hearing any unusual noises from the engine bay since they repaired it? Is the power level normal?

Just the 299, no 401. They triple checked the clamps again yesterday and everything was fine. Even tried running without the air filter just in case they were getting an erroneous code... but sadly, no change.

Not sure about any unusual noises or power loss... I haven't seen the Jeep in a week.

Have they looked INSIDE the CAC and intercooler hoses? If JiffyLube put the wrong weight oil in there, I'd fully expect them to not put the right amount in either.

<rant>In fact, I'd always expect Jiffy Lube to do something wrong. I've never looked at a vehicle that had service there and not found SOMETHING wrong with their job. From stripped pan threads, to lack of oil, to NO oil, to incorrect size air cleaner element, to leaking oil filter, etc. As much as I love a bargain, it's not worth going to the automotive equivalent of a snake oil salesman with your CRD. They just can't handle the complexity of a 10 step instruction manual</rant>.

Underboost could just be a crapload of oil being blown into the intake system from the crankcase, no? AND it might be misinterpreted by the computer AND it's fast and free to check.

Dan

I haven't read the entire thread, so pardon me if this has already been suggested.

Has anyone checked the MAP sensor. It might be so gunked up that it can't measure boost. It might actually be fine, but the comptuer thinks it's not.

As for Jiffy Lube...I stand and watch them work on my vehicle. I make sure they put in oil, and change the filter. Of course, the CRD is a 4x4 and I can easily lay on my back and reach the drain plug and filter so I do it myself. Takes a whole 20 minutes of work maximum and I know the job is done right.

I also routed the drain hose from my Provent down right next to the filter . It's actually zip tied near the wheel well. If you guys aren't running the EHM or Provent, DO IT! You wouldn't believe the spooge I get out of that tube. Thick, nasty, dirty, oily funk. It's not pretty. I'd hate to know that crap was going into my turbo.

That bears repeating. The first thing that came to mind when I saw "turbo underboost" was "MAP sensor" since I just went through the very same thing on my E300.

We finally have a winner!!

It was the turbo... the dealer found it was going bad and somehow started pumping oil into the EGR. And (so far at least) the turbo is covered under the CarMax extended warantee (we'll see once the warantee company 'inspector' comes to have a look).

If it's not covered, be sure to check out your rebuild options.

A rebuild will take more time, but it should be a LOT cheaper.
