From talking to some "Experts" in this field, two things happen when you clear the codes on an OBDII CPU. First, the codes are a list of "Triggers" that set off the CEL light that are recorded faults. Some of these faults will clear in time if what caused them has gone away. Each time there is a "Successful Engine Cycle" the fault is shifted one place. I don't know how many places there are, but eventually they fall off the list. A "Successful Engine Cycle" is a warm up, drive for X amount of miles, and then cool completely down.
The second thing clearing the codes do is also clear the memory that 2(?) or more successful drive cycles have been completed with no faults. This is what keeps you from just clearing the codes and going through an emissions test and passing. They look to see if it has passed the self check of so many successful drive cycles.

Now this does NOT force the CPU into a learning mode. To do a learn mode, one way is with the factory DRB3 scan tool. (This is how the flash the CPU, etc.). I'm also told (but have not confirmed yet) that disconnecting the battery will also force a learn mode (but will not clear codes).

So what cost you $60.00 ????? Inquiring minds want to know.......

I guess it works.

It tells me I have a P0102 error both recorded and pending. It does not tell the mileage nor does it record the data, download it to the computer to commiserate or send it to NASA.

But yes, the Actron OBD II Pocket Scan scanner that I got from Autozone for $60, normally ~$69, will clear the codes and turn off the CEL...but it is no frill device and works off the jeeps power.

So, you see, I can turn off my CEL now and I did it on the cheap...I just wanted to verify that I wasn't screwing something else up when the codes were cleared.

very nice, sounds like the thing I need when I get the ORM-II installed, just need to build the thing now.......but wait, if the ORM-II shows the all's well, then after the start-heat-shutdown-cool cycles the CEL should go away?

Mr. turbo, is that accurate? I'm going to build one asap now that I have the print, parts list etc.. and my bench is tidy. any further corrections to your info, or can I go ahead with the current schematic.

Ok, here is another update. If someone wants the files for a laid out circuit board, I have them. Just PM me and I'll send it to you. The program that it was done on is a freeware from: http://www.expresspcb.com/
Just insert the file and get pricing, and you too can have a circuit board.
This circuit board was designed to fit the metal box that I used, using the plastic round connector. NOTE that the pricing is different for their "Special" as that is a predefined size board.
You'll need both programs, the PCB schematic and the PCB circuit board layout programs.
Let me know.....

Anybody interested in getting some of these made? I've just gotten the files from TT (thanks!) and have been looking them over - its taking me a while trace the circuits but I'm slowly figuring it out. The cost estimate from expresspcb is anywhere from $40 each (2 boards) down to $12 each (10 boards).

Tim, I need a little help here. Does this layout take into account your previous recommendation of using the box as a heatsink for those large resistors?

sign me up for one. If you start an order list, I bet there are a couple more willing to pitch in.
thanks for making this closer to reality :D

Yes, there should be plenty of room. You'll notice that the two mounting holes on the top of the board are the two of the four mounting bolts for the square flange on the plastic round 9-pin connector that I used. The other end of the board wedged between the power resistor and one of the mounting screws for the power resistor (I used two because I had them). You could also just add another hole to mount the board at that end also if you use one resistor.

As always, get everything first and make sure it all fits BEFORE you go drilling any holes. Keep me posted......

OK, edon do we need to start a list and does anyone have an idea as to how to handle the money and distribution. We have buy sell section on the site but the process seems a little convoluted to me.

If their is a list, count me in.

Wow! Sure is alot of intrest here... I've been PMed by a member who has already ordered some boards (not sure if he used TurboTim's layout though). I'd like to see how they turn out first. If they work OK, then we could put in a large order with expresspcb for their "Production Service" quality, which would include a solder mask and silk-screen of component locations. According to their cost estimate calculator, this would only cost $307 for 30 boards, plus the cost of re-shipping to each individual. The other thing we might consider is getting the components in "bulk" and packaging them with the circuit board as a complete "kit" - anyone with some spare time on their hands? I wouldn't mind doing that but shipping to you guys from here in Canada is too expensive - still haven't figured out why its so much cheaper US to Canada.

OK fellas. I would be willing to order the components and boards and put together kits that you guys could assemble for $65 dollars shipped. Canada orders might be a little more to cover shipping. If there are at least 30 of you who would like the kit option let me know as I am ready to place the necessary orders to make this happen. We will of course split the cost of Turbo Tim's kit as a thanks for pioneering this mod. I am starting a new thread called ORM Kit. Please add your name to the list there if you want to go for the kit.

What would be involved in assembling one of these from a kit? I would idealy like to buy one already built.. as I have never built a circuit or whatever.

The kit will include everything on Turbo Tim's parts list as well as a PCB to put the parts on. All that will be required will be a soldering Iron, Solder and some cutting to fit the connector in the housing as well as mounting the resistor to the housing. If there are a few of you who can not do the build or do not feel comfortable PM me and we can work out a price on a built up kit where all you would have to do is splice in to the various connections in the CRD wiring, although these connections should be soldered as well.

Ok, fellas to keep things simple lets use the signup list in the ORM Kit thread. So if you are not on the list in the other thread and want the kit, hop on over there and get signed up.

After talking to my local board designer, he recommends Automotive grade components and the board to be sealed. Seal the board with a coating or epoxy completely as moisture may create issues. I am interested in a complete board only if these are automotive grade and coated.

My local PCB builder wanted $5600 to design and layout this board and two prototypes to verify circuit. Then with all options, boards were $45 each and less for 100+

BTW I have confirmed on five tanks of fuel a 4 mpg gain with the ORM.

Sorry for digging up old threads but...

After reading through this it appears that disconecting the MAF, AFC and EGR all make your Jeep work better. But throws a CEL.

My question is why would i disconnect the MAF if i have disconnected the EGR. I thought we where only disconnecting the MAF to disable the EGR. Surely if i disconnect the EGR anyway i can leave the MAF installed - does it not make sense that its a good thing for the computer to know how much air is coming into the engine?

If i plug the MAF in and disconnect the EGR i cant see it doing any harm?
 Thoughts ?
