Summer tires

I don't want to start a rant about how bad the stock tires are, BUT...

I'm looking for a new set of summer tires (prefereably load range D or E for trailer towing) and has anyone found a set of tires that might post better mileage? Most comments seem to be that mileage decreases slightly with different tires. I know I lose 1-2 mpg when I switch to my MT/R's.

Any recommendations?

Last time I was at Sam's Club, they had both BF Goodrich and Goodyear (different model than the Wranglers) LT rated tires in the OEM size, load ranges D and E.

If you have a Cooper dealer in your area, might want to check what they have available. Put a set recently on my mother's '92 Mustang, and it's like driving an entirely different vehicle. It now drives and handles like a car instead of a buckboard wagon.

She's nearly 70 years old, and drives a 5.0 Mustang convertible.

Stock tires:

I run BFG Long Trail TA......Absolutely love em.

Stupid screw:

I plugged it and run 15k more miles on those same tires.

Tirerack.com has the 245/75 for $114 each in load range E.

and 245/75 in the Load range D for $93 each.

I love the tire, always treated me very well, excellent winter tire too. Very good on treadwear.

On my Ranger, I have Liberator A/T from Wal-mart, LT235/75R15, look almost new with 40K miles on them. No negative impact on fuel economy compared to the OEM P225/70R15 tires. They do not have great wet traction. They have LT225/75R16. The Liberator is made by Michelin (owner of BF Goodrich and Uniroyal).

I put on Bridgestone Dueller A/T's shortly after I got my CRD. Same size as OEM tires. I regularly pull a trailer with the CRD and the tires don't "whine" running at highway speeds. They have done a great job off the road as well. Tire tread life is a little less than I thought they should be, but, even driving gravel road DAILY and off road, they have never had a flat. I also have averaged about 26-27 mpg with occasional bursts over 30 mpg. With trailer, I seem to average about 22-23 mpg. Of course all of this is running about 85% highway since I don't live or work in a big city. Got these tires because I live in the country and the snow drifts in the winter and the mud in the farm fields. I guess if you don't run into such conditions as often as I do, this tire may not be the best choice. But the numbers are in, and they have performed quite well.

I already have a set of Goodyear Wrangler MT/R's for winter and off roading (picture of one I trashed last year - sidewall blew out driving home after a mild off road excursion)

So these are more than adequate for Michigan winters. I was looking for a set of summer only tires that would wear like iron, be relatively quiet, and return some mpg.

I was thinking about (choke $$$) a set of Michelin XPS Ribs. The reviews at tirerack.com are encouraging.

I love having an excuse to buy new ones for my Jeep.........problem is I get the excuse right after having spent money on buying the jeep, after throwing 9k at something another $500 doesnt sound fun.

But I sure love new tires, and the long trails make a great highway tire, and a good winter/wet/snow tire. I highly recommend them to anyone needing new all around tires.

Since we have a dedicated set of snow tires/wheels for the CRD, I am looking for a new three-season tire once my current Firestone Destination A/Ts are worn down. Here are some tires I was looking at in the 225-75/16 size:

We have at least another 10k-20k miles left in the Destination A/Ts, so I won't need to decide any time soon. The Forteras are the most expensive, but seem the best choice. The Destination LEs are also promising.

I was running Destination LE's (245/70/16) on mine for the last 8K miles I owned it. Was the smartest investment spent on the Jeep. Spooky quiet on the highway and will still pull through foot-deep snow. Highly recommend this product, especially for the money.

I replaced the OEMs with Michelin LTX. I use them all year and they are great in the snow. I am in NH and it does snow here a fair amount. I have had the Jeep out on rough dirt trails as well, but no "rock climbing". I have about 35k on them and there is still more than 1/2 the tread remaining, but they are not the most quiet tires I have ever had. I would get anotther set when the time comes (if the Jeep lasts that long).

My OEM's are at the very end of their sad little lives at 2/yrs, 26k, two puntures. If I am really honest with myself, my Jeep is a baby-carraige that occasionally goes on highway trips and looks at mountains from the road, a dirt road at worst.

Question: Should I go up a size for looks (PLEASE) or should I be honest and realize that the mileage/handling/baby safety would be better in the stock-size range? If so, which is tire would be rec'd for mileage/handling (safety), especially in rain? (We don't get as much snow as we used too in CT).

I'm ready to buck up too. My OEM's have 22k+ and are slipping in the rain. State inspection is due next month. With the lift, I plan to go higher. Probably going with the Goodyear Silent Armors in 245/70/16. Should I have any concerns? Has anyone had the stealership reprogram the tranny for bigger tires (not that the odometer is correct anyway)?

I run the Kumho 798 225-75-16 H SPEED RATED from Tire Rack at $68 each. They have been great for me in daily autobahn driving and towing. They have lasted longer that the OEM tires which crapped out at 16,000 miles. Plus the price can't be beat. They offer them in 245-70-16 for the same price. They are great in the dry when i was pushing it around the Nuerburgring a few weeks ago.

We just put on the Fortera Silent Armor's about 1000 miles ago. Very good comfort and very quiet. So far so good, I'd buy them again.

I had the Michelin LTX on my Cummins. They were good and if I have problems obtaining the XPS Ribs, they will probably be my second choice.
