I can learn how to do the maintainence myself, and I HATE the idea of giving the stealership any more money, so I was wondering...

Is there a guide to maintanence? Im looking for something pretty detailed, like what to do on every service and where to lube, what to check, what products to use in what amounts, what to look for, etc.

Basically an idiots guide that will let me keep my jeep awesome without taking it in?

The most comprehensive one I know of is the Service Manual that DC puts out. I bought mine for something like $150 Canadian, and it is very detailed and well laid-out in sections. This manual has all the service schedules from first service through 120,000 miles.

Mostly, though, LOST is the best source of info for doing service. Just ask what you need to know, and badabing, step by step instructions appear like magic. 8) Many service instructions exist here already.

I'm gradually becoming a driveway mechanic (and my driveway is gravel, ouch!) because a) it's fun, b) why pay the dealership a couple of hundred bucks to change a few fluids that YOU CAN (yes, you) do easily with directions found here? and c) it's fun. The service manual is very handy at times, though. I read it quite a bit.

I change all my fluids, differentials, etc. The only thing that I have questions about is the "other" stuff they check, like lube points, "checking the chassis", and I dont know how to change axle fluid (if I even want to )etc. There is a lot to check and I know I may miss something that would stick out like a sore thumb to a mechanic

I usually check pretty much anything that moves. Ball joints, suspension, steering parts, anything with a bushing.

The only thing I wont do is Automatic Transmission stuff. Boy do I hate automatics.

csukoh78, the differential lube and axle fluid are the same thing, unless you mean greasing the front half shafts. Check out these pages for differential lube info:

You can also subscribe to most of the service manual and all the technical service bulletins for around $20:

I had my local stealership throw in a brand new shop manual with my used 02 Sport when I bought it. Being an 02 I don't know if I can shed any light on it for your questions. But if you need any info I would be happy to look any info up for you. I might take a little time to get back to you but I'm willing to help if I can.

You can get a Chilton's for $18. I don't think that's to bad for everything it offers.
