Breathers

Well I extended all my breathers this morning. It took me about hour and half to go to the store, pick everything out and drive back and extend the breathers.
$20 for 10 foot of 5/6" hoes, 4 brass connectors and 8 clamps.
The front diff was the easiest, i extended it to the brake booster and tied it to one of the other hoes.
Rear diff was not that hard either, I found it right next to the gas tank and extended it few feet and clipped it to the pinch weld next to the gas cap.
The tranny breather was not hard to find, I followed the groung wire from the firewall to the block and right there was the breather. I extended it to the brake booster also.
Now the transfer case breather was pain in the butt.

I found it along the tranny dipstick and it was very dirty, I unhooked it from the block and tried pulling the breather cap off with no luck.
Finally after fighting with it for good 20 minutes, I took scissors and cut the hoes little below the breather cap. Since I was in the bind doing all this the cut turned out on the angle. I got my new hoes with the barb connector and tried inserting it into the transfer case hoes but it was so slick I couldn't hold it. I couldnt really get to it to clean it up either. So I sprayed some silicone lube on the barb connector and after another 20 minutes was able to put the connector in the transfer case breather. Since I cut the transfer case breather on the angle, one side of it was all the way to the top of the connector while the other side was way down. I didnt want to take it off and try cutting it again to make it even, instead I got a clamp and put it aroung the transfer case hoes and barb connector where the lower side of the hoes was. I also found some gutter sealer that is water tight and waterproof and I applied it all the way around the connector where one side of the transfer case hoes was lower than the other on the barb connector. I hope that seals it good enough.
When I went to the store I bought some clamps that I was going to put on each hoes on each side of the barb connector, but the connector went in so tight everywhere, I didn't think the clamps where needed plus i can always put them back on if I need to.
And without the silicon spray I could of never put those barb connector into the hoes.

I thought I would let you guys know how it went, and any comments are welcome if you think I did somehting wrong if you think there is a better way of doing something.

Also the transfer case breather is indeed located along the tranny dipstick, right?

Sounds like you were really pimping your KJ w/ all those "Hoes" around it. :wink:

I was looking at my rear diff breather today while tracking down the cause of my CEL. found the cracked hose that is tripping my light and noticed the breather hose sitting there. You would have to have water half way up the door before that hose would be under water. Sounds like you found a good spot to route them too though.

Just went out last night and did my trans and front diff breathers, routed them pretty much where wildrussian did:

And I found that getting to the trans breather (the one attached to the trans dipstick tube) was a lot easier when I removed the coolant overflow tank - after that I could get my thick hands and a pair of plumbers pliers in to get the breather cap off and attach the extension:

I extended the rear diff this morning, routing it up alongside the fuel filler down-tube. The only one I have left to do is the t-case, and I just need to find out the best way to get to it with the skid installed (well, and wait for this evening when it's cool enough to work on the Jeep again

) Right now I figure the top of the rear diff tube is at least 35", and the front diff and trans tubes are 40" above pavement. If I can get the t-case tube that high I'll be happy!

What size hose and barbs are you all getting? Where do you get it? Auto parts store? Are you using pipe clamps on all the barbs?

Corwyyn, thats the tcase breather on the tranny dipstick.

I used 5/16" fuel line from the auto store, and plastic connectors from same. No hose clamps - once the connectors are in they aren't going anywhere very easily. Some of the other folks are using brass connectors but I figure the breather caps are plastic and don't seem to have any problems. It's not like this is a super-critical vacuum line or anything...

Hmmm, so why does the diagram for the 42RLE in the parts manual call #13 a vent and show it routed from the transmission up the dipstick???

hmm, Ive always read that the one on the tranny dipstick was the tcase. I guess it would make more sense if the tranny vent was on the tranny stick.

So the tcase is the one thats hard to find? Ive looked at both of them but Ive never traced them back to see where they go.

I thought the tranny was the one thats in the starter area.

Maybe they moved them at some point?

Well, the diagram for the transfer case is kinda vague - it shows the vent tube coming up and over, but there are several components in the parts list that aren't pictured. Anyway, I think I'll toddle out to my Jeep and see if I can find that last one, then I'll be done and ready for action

Oh, and here's a diagram of the t-case components with the breather assembly hi-lited ('03 231 (DHN) Selec-trac transfer case - I can post a diagram of the Command-trac if needed):

Lots of discussion here http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/vie ... her#179926 on finding that last breather. I think they mixed up the Tcase/trannie but had pics on finding the hard one.

Sorry I didn't post pictures, its hard to figure out how to do it, but will post some as soon as I can.
I would like to know which breather is which for sure because I feel good about doing the breathers but feel bad for knowing which one is which.

I hear you on that, those hoes anit going anywhere after those connectors went in.

I used 5/16" 30R6 line on mine from the local hardware store along with 5/16 brass connectors.
I figured I pay a dollar something per brass connector aint gonna kill me.
